Wanted: Amazing Business Intern ? UIE Brain Sparks

We?re looking for an amazing Business Intern for a paid, 4-month internship.

Fast Forward Four Months?

We?d like to thank you for doing a fantastic job as our 2012 Winter Business Intern. You started with a thorough analysis of the purchasing patterns in our UIE Virtual Seminar series. This led to some amazing insights on how we could restructure the program, which helped us with key initiatives we launched this spring.

At the same time, you put together a marvelous weekly social media outreach strategy. Once you started executing it, we saw a real lift in the conversations we?ve had with our customers, which has had a direct affect on our bottom line.

When you turned your keen attention to compiling the history of our revenue sources for the last few years, you uncovered some interesting patterns about who our customers are and how they like doing business with us. We?ll use those insights to drive new products for years to come.

You also created a database of our marketing partnerships, to help us know who to contact and what they?re interested in. This makes it easy for us to make our partners aware of our latest offerings.

To top it off, you?ve even helped us document our business development process to make life easier for future interns.

Thanks for your energy and enthusiasm during your internship. We know you?ll succeed at your future ventures.

Now Back To Today?

If you?d like this to be your story, send us your resume with a half-page write up of your most significant business accomplishment. While we?re less concerned with your skills and qualifications, we won?t compromise on your ability to deliver team results. We?ll be back to you in 24 hours if you have what it takes to achieve something special.

You might even want to check out our web site for some insight into what we?re doing. We think you?ll be excited by where we are today and the challenge to get us where we?re going.

You will work in our North Andover offices. (Sorry, we don?t hire remote employees.) We?ll provide all the equipment you need, including Apple hardware and Mac software to bring out the best in your talents and skills.

Statins tied to lower risk of fatal prostate cancer (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? In a new study of middle-aged New Jersey men, taking cholesterol-lowering drugs was linked to a lower chance of dying from prostate cancer.

The findings don't prove that the drugs, called statins, ward off aggressive cancer. But they jibe with previous studies suggesting that getting cholesterol levels under control might help reduce the risk of life-threatening disease, researchers said.

"People may be on these medications for their heart, but it may actually be doing them some good for their prostate," said study author Dr. Stephen Marcella, from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in New Brunswick.

"If a person's on the fence about taking a statin medication for their heart, this is another potential benefit they may have by taking one of these," he told Reuters Health.

Marcella and his colleagues collected the medical records of 380 men who had died of prostate cancer and another 380 of the same age and race without prostate cancer or with non-lethal cancer.

Most of the men were white and in their mid- to late-60s, on average. Close to one in four of the men in both groups combined had ever taken a statin.

The researchers found that men who died of prostate cancer were half as likely to have taken a statin at any time, and for any duration, than men in the "control" group.

When they accounted for whether or not men were overweight and their other health problems and medications, it turned out that those with fatal cancers were 63 percent less likely to have ever taken a statin, according to findings published in Cancer.

But, Marcella added, "I would not tell a person if they don't have a risk of heart disease, (if) they don't have hypertension...to take a statin just to prevent lethal prostate cancer."

The evidence that's effective, he said, just isn't there yet.

And even if statins do turn out to help prevent fatal prostate cancer, researchers said, previous studies have suggested they don't lower a man's risk of getting less aggressive forms of the disease.

According to the American Cancer Society, about one in every six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point, and one in every 36 men will die of the disease.

Marcella's team didn't have the data to figure out if taking a statin for longer, or starting one earlier, was more beneficial than more limited use of the drugs.

'VERY TRICKY TO SORT OUT'

The researchers also couldn't tell whether men started using statins before or after they were diagnosed with aggressive cancer.

But they did find that while high-potency, often newer statins were linked to a lower risk of fatal prostate cancer, lower-potency drugs were not. That suggests it's something about the drugs themselves that lower men's chances of dying from prostate cancer, Marcella said.

Statins may protect against fatal prostate cancer through their known cholesterol-lowering effects, said Dr. Stephen Freedland, who studies prostate cancer at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, but wasn't involved in the new study.

He said that cholesterol is a "key nutrient" for cancer cells, so lower cholesterol levels in the body could prevent more aggressive forms of cancer from developing.

But it's also possible that statins don't prevent certain cancers at all, Freedland said, and it's something else about men who take statins -- for example, if they also change their diet and start exercising -- that explains their lower risk of fatal cancer.

"It gets very, very tricky to sort out," Freedland told Reuters Health.

To prove that statins protect against aggressive cancer would require a large study in which cancer-free men, or those with early-stage disease, are randomly assigned to take statins or not and then tracked for years to see how many of them die from cancer.

That type of study, especially involving healthy, disease-free men, would be very expensive and time consuming, said Dr. Nelly Tan, from the University of California, Los Angeles, who has studied statins and prostate cancer risk.

About one-quarter of adults age 45 and older in the U.S. take statins to lower cholesterol and protect against heart attacks. The drugs run anywhere from $11 to more than $200 per month, and sometimes cause side effects including muscle pain, nausea and gas and liver dysfunction.

Researchers agreed that until there's clearer evidence for benefit, men with healthy hearts shouldn't seek out statin prescriptions for the purpose of lowering their prostate cancer risks.

But Freedland said that other strategies for lowering cholesterol -- such as eating better and exercising regularly -- are ways almost everyone can lower their disease risks in the meantime.

Galaxy Tab 10.1 vs Acer Iconia A500: Tablet Shootout

Christmas 2011 came and went without a new iPad, but if you're still thinking of getting yourself a new tablet at after-Christmas sales, check out the Acer Iconia A500 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Both are 10-inch Android powered tablets, but the Iconia is cheaper by $100. While Acer has a reputation for building inexpensive yet middling laptops, their venture into the tablet world is a chance for them to put their stamp on a still very new sector. Samsung on the other hand is the big dog on the tablet block next to Apple, and their prices reflect it.

The A500 is a 16 gigabyte tablet with cameras on front and back, good resolution, full-size USB and mini HDMI ports and average battery life. It should also get the Android 4.0 update in early 2012. Galaxy Tab 10.1 is also a 16 gigabyte device, but it has a bit better of a camera than the Iconia A500, is a bit lighter and could get the Android 4.0 update even sooner. That's because Samsung is the company that built the Galaxy Nexus smartphone for Google, so they might get the first shot at updating their tablets as well.

Both devices are available in 32 gigabyte versions, and the Iconia A500 also comes in an AT&T supported 4G version. One major difference is in the software. Samsung adds their TouchWiz software to the Android system and the Iconia A500 is more of a stock Android interface. Additionally, Samsung uses plastic throughout the Galaxy Tab build, and some people don't like the feel because they think it's cheaply made. The A500 is made with brushed aluminum on the back, and while it feels and looks nice, it does add weight. Acer may not have made a tablet with the best battery or cameras, but if you can look past that, the much lower price compared to the Galaxy Tab makes it the recommended buy. Tell us in the comments if you're still?shopping for that perfect tablet. ?

Holland Taylor on life, love and Charlie Sheen (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Holland Taylor offers no apologies for never settling down, getting married or having children.

The 68-year-old Emmy-winning actress, currently starring in her one-woman show "Ann" at Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center, simply never had the time.

"I always did think I would be married and settled down by now but maybe I ain't ready," she said, sounding a lot like the over-the-top mother of Jon Cryer she portrays in the CBS comedy "Two and a Half Men." "Then again, maybe I won't ever be ready."

Taylor's career blossomed in her mid-30s and the New Yorker with Pennsylvania roots has been on a dizzying pace ever since, starring on the stage, in television and on film.

Having a family just wasn't in the script.

"I'm very, very happy. I just never was the marrying kind," she said. "I am a serial monogamist. I don't have multiple relationships at once.

"I've had a long life and a lot of relationships and not one of them do I wish -- well, I take that back -- there are a couple I could have done without," she added with a chuckle.

Taylor's current love is "Ann," which is based on the life of quick-witted, sharp-tongued former Texas Gov. Ann Richards.

Seconds after a recent performance at the Kennedy Center, the audience was on its feet, cheering wildly for the show and its star.

While the applause was quick that night, overall it was a long time coming for Taylor. The actress conceived the show nearly six years ago and has been researching it and writing it ever since. She admits to being captivated about the dynamic Richards, who died in 2006 of esophageal cancer.

"I had a lot of creative feelings about her," Taylor told Reuters. "If I had been a painter, it would have been a painting. If I had been a composer, it would have been a piece of music. I had to do something with my feelings about this loss."

Taylor said the idea of taking Richards' story to the stage "came to me very suddenly."

"I was literally driving to work at my television show one day and I had to pull off the highway onto the service road," she recalled. "I had the idea it should be a play because of her liveliness and her contact with the audience.

"She herself said, 'I was good as a candidate over the years only because I connect with people one on one.' I decided right then a play is how it should be done."

NO LOOKING BACK

Taylor has perfected Richards' Southern drawl and eerily looks like the Texas politician whose energizing keynote address at the 1988 Democratic National Convention elevated her to widespread prominence.

The actress insists she brought Richards' story to the stage not because she could play the role but to celebrate the politician's life.

"She was not a person who looked back. Ever," Taylor said. "She did not revisit things. She was rolling along, like a wheel that goes under and then over. Under and over. But always moving forward.

"If she fell, she fell forward. And that is not the way I am. I get very upset. I can get very waylaid. I get blue. I can become chicken little.

"And now when I do, I think, 'What would Ann Richards think of this behavior?'"

During breaks in the show's pre-Broadway tour -- it is playing now through January 15 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts -- Taylor will continue her role on "Two and a Half Men." She is glad its former star, Charlie Sheen, survived his firing and public meltdown earlier this year and has moved on.

"It was painful for me to see him in pain and he did something very, very dangerous by first of all, obviously doing drugs to that degree is dangerous, but quitting very violently is very dangerous too," she said.

"And he went through really an amazing thing out in public. I just was terrified for him. I think everybody was. But he got through it alive which is all anybody wanted."

Taylor said she would see his daily rants and described them as "very scary."

"There were a few days there where I would open the paper, and I would be so frightened to see that something really terrible happened," she said. "I'm glad he escaped that."

Holland Taylor is in a good spot these days, healthy, happy and with more job offers than she knows what do with. Just don't expect her to slow down anytime soon.

With a laugh, she said she would "commit an ax murder" before attempting to conceal her age.

"It would seem so silly," she said backstage at the Kennedy Center. "I really, truly genuinely struggled quite hard until I was in my mid-30s. "I personally was at sea.

"But that's long gone. I'm doing OK. I'm better than OK."

REPEAT-BMO: Keep a Close Eye on Debt Levels During Holiday Shopping Season

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 26, 2011) - With the holidays in full-swing, BMO Bank of Montreal today released tips on how to keep debt levels in check over the holiday season.

Following the comments Monday by Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney, BMO offered Canadians tips on how to keep debt levels in check over the holiday season.

"With the holiday shopping season in full swing, consumer spending is likely higher than normal among Canadian households," said Su McVey, Vice President, Customer Communications & Marketing, BMO Bank of Montreal. "Especially at this time of the year, consumers need to be prudent and watchful in regards to their finances and keep in mind the importance of proper debt management, including credit card spending, to avoid any harsh surprises in the New Year."

"Canadian households continued to amass more debt in the third quarter of 2011, now totalling more than $1.6 trillion or 151 per cent of personal disposable income - both record-high levels," said Michael Gregory, Senior Economist, BMO Capital Markets. "Abnormally low interest rates have kept these elevated debt burdens very manageable, for now. But, Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney has been warning Canadians to be cautious with their credit demands as 'more normal' interest rates will eventually return."

BMO Bank of Montreal offers these 4 tips to avoid over-spending over the holiday season:

  • Create a budget and stick to it - Spend less than you make. Develop a budget that establishes how household expenses will be paid and how spending will be managed. Take advantage of free online tools, such as BMO MoneyLogic?, to help stay on top of everyday household spending and saving.
  • Manage credit card debt - Pay down credit cards, beginning with those that carry the highest rate, and consider using a low rate card for purchases. For instance, the BMO Preferred Rate MasterCard offers a low rate of 11.9 per cent for an annual fee of $20 per year.
  • Have a back-up plan - Plan ahead and develop a fall back plan in case you are unable to meet your financial obligations due to unexpected circumstances, such as loss of work, or damage to personal property, including your home or vehicle.
  • Invest to save - Set up a Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA) or high interest savings account such as the BMO Smart Saver Account to set aside extra cash in case of an emergency.

BMO experts are available to discuss ways Canadians can deal with debt and manage spending and savings.

Suicide attacker kills 7 at Baghdad checkpoint (AP)

BAGHDAD ? A suicide bomber set off a car bomb Monday at a checkpoint leading to the Iraqi Interior Ministry, killing seven people and injuring 32 others, officials said.

The attack followed a series of bombings last week that killed up to 70 people in a single day, increasing fears about Iraq's future after U.S. troops withdrew this month.

Two police officers said the bomber struck during morning rush hour, hitting one of many security barriers set up around the ministry's building. Five policemen were among the dead, they said.

Two doctors at nearby hospitals confirmed the causality figures. All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release information.

No one has claimed responsibility, but suicide attacks are the hallmark of the al-Qaida in Iraq terror group.

U.S. and some Iraqi officials have warned of a resurgence of Sunni and Shiite militants and an increase in violence after the full U.S. troop withdrawal.

Adding to Iraq's troubles is an increase in political tension stemming from a showdown between the Shiite prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, and the top Sunni political leader in the country.

Al-Maliki's government has issued an arrest warrant for Sunni Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi on charges that he ran hit squads against government officials.

Al-Hashemi has denied the charges and said they are politically motivated.

'Anonymous' hackers target US security think tank

(AP) ? The loose-knit hacking movement "Anonymous" claimed Sunday to have stolen thousands of credit card numbers and other personal information belonging to clients of U.S.-based security think tank Stratfor. One hacker said the goal was to pilfer funds from individuals' accounts to give away as Christmas donations, and some victims confirmed unauthorized transactions linked to their credit cards.

Anonymous boasted of stealing Stratfor's confidential client list, which includes entities ranging from Apple to the U.S. Air Force to the Miami Police Department, and mining it for more than 4,000 credit card numbers, passwords and home addresses.

"Not so private and secret anymore?" the group taunted in a message on Twitter, promising that the attack on Stratfor was just the beginning of a Christmas-inspired assault on a long list of targets.

Anonymous said the client list it posted was a small slice of the 200 gigabytes worth of plunder it stole from Stratfor and promised more leaks. It said it was able to get the credit details in part because Stratfor didn't bother encrypting them ? an easy-to-avoid blunder which, if true, would be a major embarrassment for any security-related company.

Austin, Texas-based Stratfor provides political, economic and military analysis to help clients reduce risk, according to a description on its YouTube page. It charges subscribers for its reports and analysis, delivered through the web, emails and videos.

Lt. Col. John Dorrian, public affairs officer for the Air Force, said that "for obvious reasons" the Air Force doesn't discuss specific vulnerabilities, threats or responses to them.

"The Air Force will continue to monitor the situation and, as always, take appropriate action as necessary to protect Air Force networks and information," he said in an email.

Miami Police Department spokesman Sgt. Freddie Cruz Jr. said that he could not confirm that the agency was a client of Stratfor, and he said he had not received any information about a security breach involving the police department.

It soon became clear that proprietary information about the companies and government agencies that subscribe to Stratfor's newsletters did not appear to be at any significant risk, and that the main threat was posed to individual employees.

Hours after publishing what it claimed was Stratfor's client list, Anonymous tweeted a link to encrypted files online with the names, addresses and account details.

"Not as many as you expected? Worry not, fellow pirates and robin hoods. These are just the "A''s," read a message posted online that encouraged readers to download a file of the hacked information.

It also linked to images online that it suggested were receipts for charitable donations made by the group manipulating the credit card data it stole.

"Thank you! Defense Intelligence Agency," read the text above one image that appeared to show a transaction summary indicating that an agency employee's information was used to donate $250 to a non-profit.

One receipt ? to the American Red Cross ? had Allen Barr's name on it.

Barr, of Austin, Texas, recently retired from the Texas Department of Banking and said he discovered last Friday that a total of $700 had been spent from his account. Barr, who has spent more than a decade dealing with cybercrime at banks, said five transactions were made in total.

"It was all charities, the Red Cross, CARE, Save the Children. So when the credit card company called my wife she wasn't sure whether I was just donating," said Barr, who wasn't aware until a reporter with the AP called that his information had been compromised when Stratfor's computers were hacked.

"It made me feel terrible. It made my wife feel terrible. We had to close the account."

Stratfor said in an email to members that it had suspended its servers and email after learning that its website had been hacked.

"We have reason to believe that the names of our corporate subscribers have been posted on other web sites," said the email, passed on to The Associated Press by subscribers. "We are diligently investigating the extent to which subscriber information may have been obtained."

The email, signed by Stratfor Chief Executive George Friedman, said the company is "working closely with law enforcement to identify who is behind the breach."

"Stratfor's relationship with its members and, in particular, the confidentiality of their subscriber information, are very important to Stratfor and me," Friedman wrote.

Repeated calls to Stratfor went unanswered Sunday and an answering machine thanked callers for contacting the "No. 1 source for global intelligence." Stratfor's website was down, with a banner saying "site is currently undergoing maintenance."

Wishing everyone a "Merry LulzXMas" ? a nod to its spinoff hacking group Lulz Security ? Anonymous also posted a link on Twitter to a site containing the email, phone number and credit number of a U.S. Homeland Security employee.

The employee, Cody Sultenfuss, said he had no warning before his details were posted.

"They took money I did not have," he told the AP in a series of emails, which did not specify the amount taken. "I think 'Why me?' I am not rich."

One member of the hacking group, who uses the handle AnonymousAbu on Twitter, claimed that more than 90,000 credit cards from law enforcement, the intelligence community and journalists ? "corporate/exec accounts of people like Fox" news ? had been hacked and used to "steal a million dollars" and make donations.

It was impossible to verify where credit card details were used. Fox News was not on the excerpted list of Stratfor members posted online, but other media organizations including MSNBC and Al-Jazeera English appeared in the file.

Anonymous warned it has "enough targets lined up to extend the fun fun fun of LulzXmas through the entire next week."

The group has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on companies such as Visa, MasterCard and PayPal, as well as others in the music industry and the Church of Scientology.

knowledgeequalsblackpower: Mathematics in Ancient Africa Rarely...

Mathematics in Ancient Africa

Rarely do historians discuss mathematics in Africa, and when they do, they only discuss it in Egypt and Northern Africa.

However, the oldest mathematical objects in the world have been found in sub-Saharan?Africa.?

The picture is of Ishango bones. They were found near Lake Edward on the borders of Uganda and Zaire and are estimated to be 25,000 years old.

At one end of the Ishango Bone is a piece of quartz for writing, and the bone has a series of notches carved in groups (shown above). It was first thought these notches were some kind of tally marks as found to record counts all over the world. However, the Ishango bone appears to be much more than a simple tally. The markings on rows (a) and (b) each add to 60. Row (b) contains the prime numbers between 10 and 20. Row (a) is quite consistent with a numeration system based on 10, since the notches are grouped as 20 + 1, 20 - 1, 10 + 1, and 10 - 1. Finally, row (c) seems to illustrate for the method of duplication (multiplication by 2) used more recently in?Egyptian multiplication. Recent studies with microscopes illustrate more markings and it is now understood the bone is also a lunar phase counter. Who but a woman keeping track of her cycles would need a lunar calendar? Were women our first mathematicians?

Considering that I?ve heard an argument that women were the first?agriculturists/farmers because men were out hunting, I think, because of the same reason, it is reasonable to assume that women created this tool.

New S Korea coach less than thrilled about new job

SEOUL - There were no mentions of dreams fulfilled or patriotic honour when Choi Kang-hee reluctantly accepted the job as South Korea's new national team coach.

Rarely has a man entrusted with such a position looked less excited to be given the chance to lead his country to the World Cup. In his first press conference in his new role today, Choi looked like he had been dragged into the hot seat.

He was content coaching Jeonbuk Motors in the mid-sized provincial city of Jeonju in Korea's rural southwest, but now the taciturn tactician is charged with the task of leading an expectant nation to Brazil in 2014 and an eighth successive appearance on the global stage.

Choi, 52, was the longest serving club coach in the domestic K-league, and since 2005 had slowly turned Jeonbuk into the best team in the country and one of the best in Asia. The former international player led the Motors to the 2006 Asian Champions League title and the final of the 2011 version, when the team dominated the match against Al Sadd of Qatar only to lose after a penalty shootout.

Four days after Choi lifted the K-League trophy for the second time with the club on Dec 4, the Korea Football Association fired Cho Kwang-rae in the wake of a shocking 2-1 defeat away to Lebanon.

Even before Cho's dismissal, the KFA contacted Choi to offer him the job. He refused, the first of a number of times he turned down advances from the association.

"Even a week ago, I didn't even think one per cent that I would be here," said Choi. "I had promised the fans and players of Jeonbuk that I would sign a new contract with the club. I changed my mind as I felt the national team is in a serious crisis."

Choi had earlier left a lengthy message on Jeonbuk's home page promising fans that it was not a goodbye but a see-you-later and was at pains to point out that he was not a long-term appointment.

"My contract will be until June 2013, and then I hope to return to my club," he said. "For the sake of the national team, Korea should find an experienced foreign manager."

Choi's words contradicted those of KFA executive director Kim Jin-kook who earlier told reporters that if the new coach took the team through qualification, he would stay on for another year.

Such a contradiction capped a confusing two weeks during which damaged the KFA's reputation.

The decision to appoint the reluctant Choi was described by sections of the local media as yet another example of the powerful national association riding roughshod over the domestic league.

Fans on internet forums have debated the Hyundai connection. Many of the top-ranked KFA executives have backgrounds with the conglomerate; Hyundai also sponsors the league and owns Jeonbuk Motors, Choi's employer.

South Korea hosts Kuwait on February 29 in Seoul. Defeat in that match and the 2002 World Cup semifinalists could be eliminated from Asian qualification at the penultimate round. A draw will seal a place in the final stage of qualification.

After appearances in every World Cup since 1986, the nation expects no less. AP

Ogilvy acquires stake in the leading Chinese advertising agency, Nanjing Yindu

WPP announces that its wholly-owned operating company Ogilvy & Mather, the leading advertising and marketing communications network, has acquired, subject to regulatory approval, 49% of Nanjing Yindu Advertising and Commerce Co., Ltd. ("Yindu"), the leading independent advertising agency in the People's Republic of China. This move expands Ogilvy's reach into the important Yangtze River Delta, a crucial region that encompasses not only Jiangsu province, which has the second highest GDP of all Chinese provinces, but also Anhui and Zhejiang provinces. And in strengthening Ogilvy's offering, as it does, in second-tier cities this initiative underlines WPP's regional approach in China, not confined to the coastal region.

Founded in 1994 and based in Nanjing, Yindu is a full service communications agency with capabilities including strategic planning, advertising, branding and corporate identity, print and media production and media buying. Areas of particular expertise include FMCG, pharmaceutical, technology, financial and lifestyle brands. It employs 250 people and clients include well known national brands such as Jiangsu Mobile, Heilan Home, Jiangsu Yanghe Brewery, Nanjing Iveco, MoonHare, Simcere, Longliqi and China Construction Bank.

Yindu had gross assets as at 31 December 2010 of RMB 57.8million and reported billings for 2010 of RMB 428.5million.

This investment continues WPP's strategy of developing its services in fast-growing and important markets and sectors. Greater China - a region WPP has been committed to for over 20 years - remains one of the fastest growth markets for the company, currently WPP's fourth largest market with revenues of US $1.1 billion. The Group currently employs 13,000 people (including associates) across Greater China, underlining its strong leadership position in the region - as in Asia overall - across all communications services.

Top rebel leader in South Sudan killed by army (AP)

JUBA, South Sudan ? South Sudan's military forces killed the country's highest-profile rebel leader, a man who posed a significant security threat to peace inside the world's newest country, an official said Tuesday.

Rebel leader George Athor was a former lieutenant general in South Sudan's military during the 1983-2005 civil war with Sudan. But Athor launched a rebellion after losing an April 2010 election for governor of Jonglei state, a vote he maintained was rigged.

Troops loyal to Athor fought repeatedly with South Sudanese forces over the last year, resulting in hundreds of deaths.

South Sudanese officials on Tuesday leveled serious charges against Athor, saying he had been making contacts with the region's most insidious rebel group ? the Lord's Resistance Army, or LRA ? and that officials in Sudan's capital Khartoum had been financing him.

South Sudan has repeatedly accused its northern neighbor, Sudan, with providing support and assistance to Athor and other rebel groups. Sudan has denied those accusations.

South Sudanese Vice President Riek Machar, in announcing Athor's death on Tuesday, said Athor had been in Rwanda, Congo and Uganda recently in a drive to recruit fighters. Col. Philip Aguer, South Sudan's military spokesman, said Athor was making militant contacts in preparation for a Christmastime attack.

Aguer said one South Sudanese soldier and one of Athor's men were also killed during the exchange on Monday evening.

Aguer said Athor's death was a major victory for the people of South Sudan which "has deprived Khartoum of an important tool."

Athor was the last major rebel leader still active in South Sudan.

South Sudan has tried repeatedly to broker peace with Athor. During South Sudan's independence ceremony from Sudan in July, President Salva Kiir offered amnesty to all rebels fighting in the country, including Athor.

Machar said Tuesday that the deal still stands.

"I call on all who rebelled against the government to lay down their arms and join the process of peace and development," he said.

Even as South Sudan faces the threat of military action from its northern neighbor, John Prendergast, co-founder of the Enough Project, an advocacy group that does work in Sudan, said Athor's death highlights the urgent need to address divisions within South Sudan.

"Another Athor will emerge tomorrow unless real progress is made in providing political and economic opportunities that feel marginalized in the process of independence," Prendergast said.

Athor's death will likely be seen as a victory for South Sudan, which has been plagued by rebel movements for years. But Jonah Leff, a Researcher for the Small Arms Survey, a security analysis group working in South Sudan, said he does not believe Athor's death will solve the rebel problem.

"I do not believe that an SPLA policy of assassinating rebel militia leaders is an effective one," said Leff. "The killing of Athor is likely to embolden many of his followers as well as other militias, including the SSLA and the Shilluk rebels in Unity and Upper Nile, respectively."

The South Sudan Liberation Army, or SSLA, is comprised of forces formerly loyal to rebel leader Gatluak Gai, who was killed in July by his own men, weeks after accepting South Sudan's offer of amnesty.

The SSLA operates in South Sudan's oil-rich Unity State, and could become a major problem for the government.

"In fact," said Leff, "the SSLA has been in serious unification talks with Athor, whose death is certain to create a vacuum of power in Jonglei, allowing the SSLA to rise to prominence."

Athor's death comes just days after the SSDM and SSLA issued a joint statement accusing South Sudan of attempting to assassinate him. The statement ? issued Dec. 13 ? said a man dressed as a priest and a woman were found carrying guns as they attempted to meet Athor. According to the statement, the two alleged assassins claimed to represent the Anglican Church, which has attempted to broker peace between Athor and the government of South Sudan.

Union leader criticizes Argentine government (AP)

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina ? A top union leader who has been a strong ally of Argentina's government is taking an increasingly critical line, and the conflict could have political costs for President Cristina Fernandez.

Union leader Hugo Moyano said Thursday that Argentine workers will keep pressing for wages that they feel they deserve. He also issued a warning to Fernandez, saying that more than half of her votes in her re-election victory in October came thanks to union workers.

Moyano said in a speech that he is resigning his posts within Fernandez's party as interim president in the province of Buenos Aires and as a national vice president.

"I'm quitting my posts, but not the struggle," Moyano said, paraphrasing Eva Peron, the wife of former President Juan Domingo Peron. "We're going to rebuild Peronism."

He accused Fernandez's party of straying from the values of Peron.

Moyano, who spoke at a soccer stadium flanked by leaders of various union groups, questioned Fernandez for her criticisms of union stances during her Dec. 10 inauguration speech. Fernandez said then that "there is a right to strike, but not to blackmail nor to extort."

Moyano heads the General Labor Confederation, the largest union group in the country. He had smoother relations with Fernandez's husband and predecessor as president, Nestor Kirchner, who died last year.

Tensions between the government and unions have grown as the government has sought to show greater restraint in public spending with an eye to shielding Argentina's finances from world economic woes.

The government has sought to limit wage increases. Union leaders say they are concerned those limits are far below inflation. Private economists say prices are rising at an annual rate of at least 27 percent, while the government insists inflation is about one-third that.

Moyano's labor group has said there should be no ceiling in wage talks. The union leader has also said soaring inflation is a major problem.

Hand, foot, mouth disease kills 156 in Vietnam

(AP) ? Vietnam says an outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease has killed 156 people, mostly children, and sickened more than 96,000 through late November.

An official at the Ministry of Health says the average number of weekly cases dropped from about 3,000 in September to 2,460 in November.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a travel alert Monday urging people visiting Vietnam to protect themselves from the disease by practicing "healthy personal hygiene."

This year's outbreak is a sharp uptick from recent years. Since 2008, about 10,000 to 15,000 cases were reported per year with about 20 to 30 children dying annually.

The common childhood illness typically causes little more than a fever and rash, and most recover quickly.

ABC has canceled "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" after nine heartwarming seasons of tear-jerking tales of sorrow and hardship bookended by even more tear-jerking scenes of joy and excitement when a family gets the keys to their brand-new house.

"For nine seasons, I was blessed to have been given the opportunity to change lives across the globe with the help of loving communities, generous sponsors, and a cast that has become my second family," interior designer Michael Moloney said in a statement. "I was lucky to have this show as a perpetual reminder of my own blessings, but my work won't stop with the end of the series. It is with a somber heart I close this chapter, but with such excitement I begin the next one."

ABC says that "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" ? which back in 2005 was pulling in an average 16 million viewers a week but dipped to less than 9 million last season ? will continue in the form of periodic TV specials.

The Emmy-winning series will sign off in true "Extreme Makeover" fashion on Jan. 13 with its 200th episode, shot in the tornado-ravaged town of Joplin, Mo.

Rodney Atkins is looking to end his marriage.

On the same day we learned about his Nov. 21 arrest on domestic violence charges for allegedly trying to smother his wife with a pillow, E! News has confirmed that the country singer has officially filed for divorce.

So what do the legal papers reveal?

Per his petition filed in Williamson County, Tennessee on Nov. 22, the day after he was taken into custody, Atkins cited irreconcilable differences as the reason as well as "inappropriate marital conduct" on Tammy Jo Atkins' part that "renders further cohabitation unsafe and improper."

Story: Rodney Atkins talks about reunion with birth mom

The 42-year-old entertainer was taken into custody after his missus called 911, claiming the two had got into a violent altercation that culminated with him trying to smother her with a pillow. She also alleged he grabbed her face and threw her down a hallway in front of their 10-year-old son, Elijah.

Rodney Atkins has adamantly denied the accusations.

On the same day he moved to dissolve their marriage, a judge signed a temporary restraining order prohibiting both Rodney and Tammy from "harassing, threatening, assaulting or abusing the other party."

Additionally, the court barred them from disposing of any marital property or relocating their children outside the state without the court's permission (Rodney also has two step-daughters).

The country star seeks joint custody of Elijah.

In her counter-complaint, Tammy also cites irreconcilable differences and asks that the court grant her sole custody of the boy. In addition, she's seeking alimony, child support and legal fees from her estranged hubby.

Sony Ericsson demos Ice Cream Sandwich, releases alpha ROM for developers (Digital Trends)

With Android Ice Cream Sandwich only officially available on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, there are sure to be plenty of Android fans who want to get a glimpse of the new version running on a different phone. Sony Ericsson has come to the rescue with this demonstration video, showing an early build running on an Xperia Arc S.

The company recently announced they would be releasing an Ice Cream Sandwich update for their 2011 range of Xperia-branded devices, however it?s a lengthy and complex process and with the source code only a few weeks old, owners still have a while to wait before it officially arrives.

Rather than work away without input from users, Sony Ericsson has released an ?alpha build? ICS ROM to accompany the video. It?s compatible with the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S, the Xperia Ray and the Xperia Neo V, and provided they have an unlocked bootloader the ROM can be installed.

Great news, right? Yes, but before you go rushing off to download it, you should know that the ROM is designed for developmental testing, and not for everyday use. Sony Ericsson wants to get as much feedback as possible, and has therefore disabled the modem, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, the FM radio and the antenna inside the ROM.

Yes, they?re spoilsports, but the alpha ROM still does a great job of showing how Ice Cream Sandwich looks and performs on devices other than the Galaxy Nexus. If you?re confident to start messing around with your Xperia phone, Sony Ericsson provides full instructions on how to apply the ROM on their developer site, and even recommends you join the XDA community afterwards to converse with like-minded hackers.

Now, how many other other manufacturers will follow Sony Ericsson?s lead and release preview versions of Ice Cream Sandwich?
