Jump in US consumer spending brightens outlook

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. consumers boosted their spending in February by the most in seven months, raising expectations for stronger growth at the start of the year.

Americans spent more even as their income barely grew. To make up the difference, many cut back on saving.

Consumer spending rose 0.8 percent last month, the Commerce Department said Friday. The biggest increase since July coincided with the best three-month hiring stretch in two years.

Paul Dales, an economist at Capital Economics, suggested that estimated annual growth for the economy in the current January-March quarter may be revised up ? to around 2.5 percent, compared with earlier estimates of about 2 percent. Consumer spending drives roughly 70 percent of economic activity.

Some of the higher spending last month reflected surging gas prices. But consumers spent more on other goods and services, too. After excluding inflation, which was due mainly to gas prices, spending rose a solid 0.5 percent.

The jump in consumer spending helped Wall Street extend its best start since 1998. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 77 points in afternoon trading. Broader indexes also gained.

Still, the job gains are not resulting in bigger paychecks for most Americans. Income grew just 0.2 percent last month, matching January's weak increase. And when taking inflation into account, income after taxes fell for a second straight month.

Most consumers spent more of what they earned and saved less. The saving rate dropped to 3.7 percent of after-tax income in February. That was the lowest level since August 2009. It had averaged 4.7 percent for all of last year.

Americans are also taking on more debt. Consumer borrowing increased from November through January by the most in a decade for a three-month stretch. Yet the increases were driven almost entirely by auto and student loans. Credit card debt decreased in January and remains well below pre-recession levels.

Dales cautioned that at some point, consumers won't be able to draw further on their savings. Further job gains are needed to boost consumers' income.

The economy has added an average of 245,000 jobs a month from December through February. That's lowered the unemployment rate to 8.3 percent, the lowest in three years. Most economists expect a similar number of net jobs added in March.

Consumers are gaining confidence in the economy, despite stagnant wages and higher gas prices. The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Survey index rose this month to 76.2 ? its highest level since February 2011.

"Consumer confidence is being driven by the improvement in the labor market," said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors.

So far, more robust hiring has yet to lift growth. The economy grew at an annual rate of 3 percent in the October-December quarter and most analysts expect that pace slowed in the January-March quarter.

Economists expect growth to rebound later this year as further hiring lifts the economy. The spending increase in February follows other data showing that may already be under way.

Americans stepped up spending on retail goods in February, the government said earlier in the month. Consumers bought more autos, clothes and appliances. They also paid higher prices for gas.

On Friday, the national average price for a gallon of gas was $3.92, according to AAA. In 11 states, the price is more than $4 per gallon.

Higher gas prices could eventually slow growth by causing some people to cut spending on other goods, from appliances and furniture to electronics and vacations. Gasoline purchases provide less benefit for the U.S. economy because about half of the revenue flows to oil-exporting nations, though U.S. oil companies and gasoline retailers also benefit.

"The bad news is that pump prices will start approaching the $4.15 - $4.20 per gallon range by Memorial Day," said Chris G. Christopher Jr., senior economist at IHS Global Insight. "The good news is that a relatively stronger job and stock market are assisting in holding up consumer spending and confidence."

St. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) ? A man charged with the bizarre killing of a popular prep school teacher lived a hardscrabble though seemingly harmless life with his family, but little was known about the woman he married last year, shocked residents of northeastern Vermont said Thursday.

The body of Melissa Jenkins, a 33-year-old science teacher at St. Johnsbury Academy, was found Monday in the Connecticut River. Authorities say Allen and Patricia Prue lured her from her home with a ruse about a broken-down car and killed her. Jenkins' 2-year-old son had been found Sunday in her idling SUV.

The couple had been riding around Sunday when Allen Prue got the idea "to get a girl," a police affidavit said. They have not elaborated, and the trickle of information has the close-knit residents of northeastern Vermont talking and wondering about the motive.

Neighbor Jessica Fontecha said Allen Prue, 30, used to shovel snow and mow the lawn for her elderly parents without being asked. She called him when her lawn mower broke and he fixed it. Last winter, he drove her to her home in a snowstorm when she couldn't get up the slippery road.

"It's easy to say 'these horrible people,' but they weren't horrible people," Fontecha said.

But once Allen married Patricia last year, Fontecha said, "we didn't see much of him."

Patricia Prue's ex-husband said that Prue, whom he met online, had requested a restraining order on him but that they hadn't talked in a couple of years.

Jeffrey Witkoff, of Littleton, Colo., said she called him once repeatedly and he didn't answer. When he called her back, she asked why he was calling, he said.

The Vermont court from which Prue, 33, reportedly sought a restraining order would not confirm whether one was in the works. Marc Eagle, a lawyer for Prue, said he hadn't yet met with her.

The couple pleaded not guilty Wednesday to second-degree murder and unauthorized burial or removal of a dead body. They are being held without bail, and more charges are possible, police said.

Dan Maguire, Allen Prue's lawyer, called the case a tragedy.

"As with all Vermonters, my heart goes out to Ms. Jenkins' family and friends," Maguire said. "We all cherish the peaceful and tranquil life, which we have here in Vermont and are shocked when that peace is broken."

The Prues live with Allen's mother, a widow, in the same run-down mobile home in Waterford where he grew up. The town had been working with the Prues to clean up their property, which was littered with metal scrap, a pile of old tires, bags of garbage and a camper.

On Thursday, five state police vehicles were parked in front of the house, which was still adorned with Christmas decorations.

"They've had hard times, but they weren't a family of bad news," said Waterford Town Clerk Joanne Jurentkuff.

Allen Prue had plowed Jenkins' driveway and asked her out a couple of times, police said. She told a friend that she felt uncomfortable around him and later had him stop plowing, but that he showed up drunk at her home in autumn 2011 to ask whether he could plow the following year.

Police say Allen and Patricia lured Jenkins from her home, with the wife calling her to say they were broken down on her road. Allen Prue then strangled her, police said.

Jenkins' young son, Ty Robertson, apparently witnessed at least part of the attack, police said. When an investigator questioned him, he pulled on the back of his neck and indicated that a perpetrator had done the same to "mommy."

Back at their home, investigators say, Allen Prue put Jenkins' body on a tarp, removed her clothes and poured bleach on her body. The Prues also removed their clothes and put them on the tarp.

They then drove to a boat access at the Connecticut River, which separates Vermont from New Hampshire, and put Jenkins' body in the water, weighing it down with cinder blocks and concealing it with brush, court documents said.

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? A person's mere presence in a room can add 37 million bacteria to the air every hour -- material largely left behind by previous occupants and stirred up from the floor -- according to new research by Yale University engineers.

"We live in this microbial soup, and a big ingredient is our own microorganisms," said Jordan Peccia, associate professor of environmental engineering at Yale and the principal investigator of a study recently published online in the journal Indoor Air. "Mostly people are re-suspending what's been deposited before. The floor dust turns out to be the major source of the bacteria that we breathe."

Many previous studies have surveyed the variety of germs present in everyday spaces. But this is the first study that quantifies how much a lone human presence affects the level of indoor biological aerosols.

Peccia and his research team measured and analyzed biological particles in a single, ground-floor university classroom over a period of eight days -- four days when the room was periodically occupied, and four days when the room was continuously vacant. At all times the windows and doors were kept closed. The HVAC system was operated at normal levels. Researchers sorted the particles by size.

Overall, they found that "human occupancy was associated with substantially increased airborne concentrations" of bacteria and fungi of various sizes. Occupancy resulted in especially large spikes for larger-sized fungal particles and medium-sized bacterial particles. The size of bacteria- and fungi-bearing particles is important, because size affects the degree to which they are likely to be filtered from the air or linger and recirculate, the researchers note.

"Size is the master variable," Peccia said.

Researchers found that about 18 percent of all bacterial emissions in the room -- including both fresh and previously deposited bacteria -- came from humans, as opposed to plants and other sources. Of the 15 most abundant varieties of bacteria identified in the room studied, four are directly associated with humans, including the most abundant, Propionibacterineae, common on human skin.

Peccia said carpeted rooms appear to retain especially high amounts of microorganisms, but noted that this does not necessarily mean rugs and carpets should be removed. Extremely few of the microorganisms commonly found indoors -- less than 0.1 percent -- are infectious, he said.

Still, understanding the content and dynamics of indoor biological aerosols is helpful for devising new ways of improving air quality when necessary, he said.

"All those infectious diseases we get, we get indoors," he said, adding that Americans spend more than 90 percent of their time inside.

The researchers have begun a series of similar studies outside the United States.

The paper's lead author is J. Qian of Yale. Other contributors are D. Hospodsky and N. Yamamoto, both of Yale, and W.W. Nazaroff of the University of California-Berkeley.

The research was supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
