HTC teases something 'Incredible' for the US in July, we think a 4G LTE Droid might fit the bill

HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE

HTC has been leaving Verizon subscribers hanging on just when they would get the Droid Incredible 4G LTE ever since we saw it in New Orleans last month. The company just dropped a not-so-subtle hint that the wait is about to come to an end -- a Twitter update from HTC's US branch is promising some "special fun" coming to us next week that will be "incredible," which we're pretty sure doesn't involve refurb sales of the 2010 original. While the clue is still a bit cryptic, it lines up with internal documents pointing to a July 5th release. We'd advise against partying too hard on Independence Day if you want to line up early for Big Red's adaptation of the HTC One line.

If you watch TV or pick up a paperback sooner or later you are bound to come across a psychic detective (a psychic detective is a person who investigates crimes by using their claimed paranormal psychic abilities). The first psychic detective appeared as early as 1897 in the form Flaxman Low who was invented by mother and son writing team Kate and Hesketh Hesketh-Prichard.

More recently TV viewers in Australia, Japan, America, Canada and the UK have been treated to the series Psychic Detectives or Psychic Investigators (the program name changed according to the country in which it was shown).

The programme follows cases in which real-life psychics try to help the police with their investigations. The series isn't too popular with sceptics who claim the psychics involved have made exaggerated claims of events. Whilst this might make good TV the series raises some questions; can psychics really help solve crimes and do the police ever resort to using psychics to help their investigations?.

Psychic Sleuths, a study of the subject by Joe Nickell PhD suggests that psychic detectives were not particularly effective; many gave uselessly vague information that could be made to fit the case after it was solved but that would have been no use to the police investigating the matter whatsoever.

Some cases however were more intriguing than the others. In 1980 a nurse went missing in LA, at the time an ordinary woman who was not a professional psychic claimed to have a vision of the nurse's body. She was able to point the area on a map where the unfortunate nurse's remains were and even arrived at the scene before the police. Nickell claims the woman could have found out about the murder site before the police as a local man had already boasted about killing the nurse. Whatever the truth of the situation a number of people have claimed their psychic abilities have allowed them to assist police in solving cases.

Most police departments say that they do not keep records regarding such activity or seek out such help. Nevertheless, there is some evidence that despite their reticence the police aren't adverse to seeking a little extra-sensory help from time to time. One former Detective Senior Constable of the Australian police; Jeffrey Little, has said police do use psychic detectives "even though they officially say they don't".

It seems the police in NSW have used psychic Debbie Malone on a number of cases. While no evidence she has supplied has solved murders or missing investigations on it's own she has been asked to corroborate theories. Little, in reference to one case she assisted on, felt her description of what happened was "exceptional", other officers also had been impressed by her assistance, while yet other NSW officers felt she had not helped solve any cases. Sergeant Gae Crea and Detective Sergeant Damian Loone, state that she did not give them anything the police and the public didn't already know.

Perhaps more interesting are the cases where the police did not listen and clearly should have. In 2001, the body of Thomas Braun was located by Perth based Aboriginal clairvoyant Leanna Adams in Western Australia. Police had initially been unable to find the body. Braun's had been told to contact Adams, an Aboriginal psychic who lived in Perth. The Braun Family had requested police to conduct a search based on Adams' directions but they had not assisted. Adams went to Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, and took the family members directly to Braun's remains, a spot high on a ridge west of the town, some 20 kilometres out. The remains were not immediately identifiable but the police later confirmed the remains to be his using DNA testing.

In the UK the Police have also officially pooh-poohed the idea of using psychic help and in 2009 the Metropolitan Police categorically denied using psychics to assist them with their cases. Later, emails were published that suggested they had used psychic helpers on investigations. The shame faced Met issued a statement which read; "We do not identify people we may or may not speak with in connection with inquiries. We are not prepared to discuss this further."

Now, if you are open to the help psychics can give you, why not have a Video Psychic Reading which guarantees a 100% refund if you are not happy. Then again, if you would prefer to speak to a Psychic by Telephone, this service is available too.

Adobe drops all Android Flash support, removing Flash Player from Google Play

The future is looking bleak for Flash Player on Android devices. From August 15th, Flash Player will no longer be available to download from the Google Play Store.

That's not all, though: it's been confirmed that Adobe's Flash plug-in won't be supported in the upcoming Android OS update, Jelly Bean, meaning pages, banners, and games written in Flash may not load properly when viewed on a device running Jelly Bean.

Abode said that the required certification of each Flash Player implementation by each separate partner program for Android means that Flash doesn't always work on every device, and, thus, fragmentation ensues.

As a result, Adobe is looking to drop Flash support for Android devices altogether. However, if you own a device that currently has Flash installed on it, you will continue to receive security patches for it.

The maker of Photoshop and Dreamweaver warns that if you upgrade your device to Jelly Bean but don't uninstall Flash, it may "exhibit unpredictable behavior", as 4.1 Flash simply isn't supported.

Is this such a big deal, then? Well, Apple's mobile devices have never supported Flash content, and they've got by just fine, with The Big A preferring to focus on supporting web standards such as HTML5 on its iPhone and iPad platforms, instead.

Good just desktops and laptops to go now and we'll finally be free of it, and I say that as an action script programmer. The web's being applified who wants to consume content inside a browser window when they can view it natively in full screen, why run an app inside app inside another app (swf inside the flash player inside the browser) when again you can run it natively at full speed.

With the applification of the web Ive come to regard web pages as an interactive books magazines or TV programs, not a replacement for applications. As a consumer and web developer all I really need is the ability to play video, play sound, interact and move things around with some tradition effects and do a few neat tricks HTML 5 gives me all of that without constant updates and security patches and from a developers perspective having to worry if the user has the latest version installed.

The sooner we abolish browser plug ins in general the better !

Zimmerman to ask judge for release on bail, again

George Zimmerman at court for his first bond hearing at the Seminole County Courthouse in Sanford, Fla., on April 20.

?

By msnbc.com's Kari Huus and NBC's Jamie Novogrod

Neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman,? who is now being held in solitary confinement, is scheduled to appear in?a Florida court on Friday, seeking another chance to be released on bail after it was revoked by a judge.

Speaking to NBC News on Thursday,?defense attorney Mark O?Mara?said that his client, charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26, presents no flight risk, no threat to the public and that the only question should be the bond amount required by the judge.

"If it is a truly large amount of money, then those supporters who are out there who have already supported him are going to have to sort of dig deeper into their pockets because quite honestly,?I need him out to help me work on the defense,? said O?Mara. "We have, let's say, a hundred hours, 120 hours, of documents and videos and audios.? I want him available to me so that I can interact with him."

"And jail is not supposed to be punishment before trial," he added.?"It's only to ensure that you come back to the courtroom, and he has shown that time and time again."

Zimmerman was not arrested until several weeks after the shooting of Martin, who was walking through a gated neighborhood in Sanford, Fla. when the encounter took place. Zimmerman asserts that he acted in self-defense and pleaded not guilty to the second-degree murder charge.

Judge Kenneth Lester?granted a request from O?Mara that Zimmerman?be allowed to appear in court without shackles and wearing civilian clothes rather than?his prison uniform.

O'Mara argued that with the heavy media presence outside the courthouse, the prison garb could damage Zimmerman's chances of getting a fair trial.

"We can't deny the fact that public perception is important," he told NBC. "Chains suggest incarceration. Chains suggest guilt."

Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, parents of the victim Trayvon Martin, were planning to be in court for Zimmerman's bond hearing, lawyers for the Martin family told NBC News.

O?Mara said he did not expect Zimmerman?s wife, Shellie, to appear at the courthouse on her husband?s behalf, because of the risk that she might incriminate herself as she battles a perjury charge.

Shellie Zimmerman is accused of misleading the court at her husband's April 20 bond hearing, when she asserted that she did not know how much money was in a PayPal account set up for contributions to Zimmerman?s legal defense.

In recorded telephone conversations from jail prior to that date, Zimmerman and his wife appear to discuss ? in thinly?disguised code ? the amount of money in the account, and he instructs her to make a series of transfers to other accounts, the prosecution charges. (Read original report.)

Special Prosecutor Angela Corey used the recordings to persuade?the judge to revoke the original $150,000 bond for George Zimmerman, who was rearrested on June 3. Shellie Zimmerman was arrested on June 12, charged with perjury and released on $1,000 bond.

O?Mara said that if Zimmerman is released on bond, he would go back into hiding for his own safety. The shooting death of Martin, an unarmed black teenager, in February has stirred an emotional national debate about race, gun rights and the "stand-your-ground" laws like the one in Florida that use a broad definition of self-defense.

Meanwhile,?Zimmerman is being held in protective custody in?isolation at the Seminole County Jail in Sanford, Fla.

"He?s reading the Bible. He is just trying to get by," said O?Mara, when asked about Zimmerman?s mental state. "But he's very worried about Shellie. That's a primary focus of his. He wants out. He wants to be able to get forward with moving the case forward."

O?Mara dismissed as irrelevant new information reported by the Miami Herald that Zimmerman was a no-show for a scheduled deposition related to a civil lawsuit he had filed to recoup wages from a former employer.

In that incident, the court fined him $10,000 after lawyers, including one who flew in from Atlanta, waited an hour and a half for Zimmerman while trying to reach him, the Herald reported.? Zimmerman ultimately did win $18,000 from the employers bankruptcy trustee, but the fine was never paid, it said.

In an email to the Herald, O?Mara said: "To the extents that courts concern themselves with a client?s appearance, missing a noticed or scheduled court proceeding is considered significant? (But) missing a deposition, while we don?t know why Mr. Zimmerman missed a deposition in a civil case, missing a deposition is not missing a scheduled court proceeding."

Contestants stand during a beauty pageant for Holocaust survivors in the northern Israeli city of Haifa on June 28, 2012. The winner, Hava Hershkovitz, is on the right.

The Associated Press reports ??Fourteen women who lived through the horrors of World War II paraded on stage Thursday night in an unusual pageant, vying for the honor of Israel's first 'Miss Holocaust Survivor'. The unusual event was hosted by an Israeli group that aids Holocaust survivors. Around 20 women, all in their 80s and 90s, told the audience their life stories.?

"I have the privilege to show the world that Hitler wanted to exterminate us and we are alive. We are also enjoying life. Thank God it's that way," said Esther Libber, a 74-year-old runner-up who fled her home in Poland as a child, hid in a forest and was rescued by a Polish woman. She said she lost her entire immediate family.

Billed by organizers as a celebration of life, the event also stirred controversy. In a country where millions have been touched by the Holocaust, many argued that judging aging women who had suffered so much on physical appearance was inappropriate, and even offensive.?Read the full story.

(AP) ? Google unveiled its attempt to catch up to Apple and Amazon in the growing market for tablet computers. It also provided a titillating glimpse at its vision of a digital future through the mind-boggling lens of Internet-connected glasses.

The debut of a long-anticipated tablet computer bearing Google's brand and equipped with its latest operating software kicked off an annual conference for about 6,000 computer programmers.

Although the tablet drew plenty of applause, the biggest crowd-pleasing moment came near the end of a nearly two-hour performance Wednesday when Google conjured a scene worthy of a "Mission Impossible" movie.

After Google co-founder Sergey Brin trotted on stage during the middle of a presentation, he cut away to a live video feed showing a group of skydivers the company hired to jump out of a blimp hovering about 7,000 feet above downtown San Francisco.

The skydivers were wearing a pair of Internet-connected glasses. That allowed the audience inside to see what the skydivers were seeing as they parachuted on to the roof of the building where the conference was being held.

The glasses are still a work in progress, although Google gave U.S. programmers attending the conference a chance to order a $1,500 prototype that they can start experimenting with early next year.

The Google-branded tablet, called the Nexus 7, will start shipping next month in a direct challenge to Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire. The tablet also could appeal to consumers looking for a less expensive, less sophisticated alternative to Apple Inc.'s iPad.

The Nexus 7 is designed specifically for Google Play, an online store that sells movies, music, books, apps and other content. That mirrors Amazon's strategy with the Kindle Fire, although Amazon's strength in online retailing has seeded its store with a more extensive selection than Google Play. Amazon declined comment.

The size and price of the Nexus 7 also matches the Kindle Fire. Both have 7-inch screens and sell for $199. The Nexus 7 is slightly lighter at about 0.75 pound, compared with the Kindle Fire's 0.9 pound.

By contrast, the iPad's screen measures nearly 10 inches diagonally and weighs 1.44 pounds. Apple sells its latest models for $499 and up, though an older version is available for $399.

Customers can start ordering the Nexus 7 through Google on Wednesday, initially in the U.S., Canada and Australia. The device won't ship until mid-July.

Google's announcement that it's putting its brand on a tablet comes a week after Microsoft Corp. did the same thing. Both moves risk alienating Google's and Microsoft's hardware partners. Those companies, in turn, could be less inclined to work closely with Google and Microsoft.

The Nexus 7's price looks like a relative bargain, given that it boasts more features than the Kindle, including a front-facing camera with 1.2 megapixels. The Kindle is believed to be a roughly break-even product for Amazon at $199. Samsung Electronics Co. sells a tablet similar to Google's for $250.

Andrew Rassweiler, an analyst with IHS iSuppli, said he suspects Google will be selling the Nexus 7 at a loss.

Google has previously put its own brand on a flagship line of "Nexus" smartphones. But that market is more mature than the tablet market, and there was less risk of Google alienating partners, particularly because it didn't price the phones lower than the norm.

Much like the Nexus phones, the Nexus 7 tablet will be a showcase for a new version of Google's Android operating system ? this one called Jelly Bean.

Although the tablet carries the Google brand, the machine will be made by AsusTek Computer Inc. Google recently expanded into the device-making business with its $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility, but the company has stressed that it intends to continue to rely on Asus and other manufacturers that have embraced Android.

Jeff Orr, an analyst with ABI Research, said Microsoft's announcement of its Surface tablet last week and Google's Nexus 7 add up to a "troubling" situation for tablet makers such as Samsung Electronics Co., which makes the Galaxy line.

When a software-supplying partner turns around and puts out its own hardware product, "is that a partner or an enemy?" Orr asked.

Orr also questioned whether Google's strategy of pricing the tablet low is really going to win it any fans in the long term. Apple, he noted, dominates the tablet market with a product that's expensive but works well.

There are already other Android-powered tablets on the market, but none have proven nearly as popular as the iPad or Kindle Fire. That has raised worries at Google as more people rely on tablets to surf the Internet.

For Google, advertising dollars are at stake. If Apple retains its dominance and other players such as Amazon and Microsoft gobble up the rest of the sales, they could set up their operating systems in ways that de-emphasize Google's Internet search engine and other services. Apple develops its own system, while Amazon modifies Android for use in Kindles. Microsoft's will run on a new version of Windows.

Apple already has announced that the next version of the iPad operating system will abandon Google's digital maps as the built-in navigation system. That shift could cause neighborhood merchants to spend less money advertising on Google.

The iPad currently has about 68 percent of the tablet market, according to Forrester Research. The research firm expects the increasing competition to whittle the iPad's share to 53 percent in 2016, with Android-powered tablets at about 30 percent and Windows tablets accounting for the remainder. Forrester predicted 760 million tablets will be in use by 2016.

"Google's user base for music, books, and movies is not nearly as strong as Apple or Amazon, so it will take time to build a strong customer base" for the Nexus 7, predicted Forrester analyst Frank Gillett.

He also said the Nexus 7 and other Android tablets are at a disadvantage because computer programmers still haven't built as many compelling applications for that platform as they have for the iPad.

In another expansion into consumer electronics, Google also announced a home entertainment device called Nexus Q that is similar to Apple TV, a small box that can stream music and movies over Internet connections. The Nexus Q sends content from your personal collection or YouTube to your existing TV and speaker systems. You control it through a separate Android phone or tablet.

The Nexus Q, which Google is calling the world's first "social streaming device," will be available in July in the U.S. initially and sell for $299. Apple TV currently sells for just $99. Other Internet-streaming devices, such as the Roku, that connect to TVs sell for even less than that.

The Internet-connected glasses that Google demonstrated won't be cheap either, although Brin told reporters Wednesday that the company plans to charge consumers significantly less than the $1,500 that developers had to pay for prototypes. The glasses, which Google is calling Project Glass, probably won't be released to the mass market until early 2014, Brin said.

"It's not a commodity product," Brin said. "We view this as a premium sort of thing."

Google began developing the Internet-connected glasses in a secret research lab more than two years ago and announced what it was working on in April. Wednesday's presentation marked the first extended demonstration of how the glasses might work.

Also on Wednesday, Google unveiled a new search tool to help you get the right information at the right time on your mobile device. Called Google Now, the tool will be part of Jelly Bean, which will be available in mid-July. Some devices, including the Galaxy Nexus, will get the upgrade automatically over the air.

With Google Now, if you say "traffic," for example, it will look at your usual commute to work and show you alternative routes if there's a lot of traffic. It will tell you the scores of your favorite sports teams automatically, and it will keep you up to date on flight statuses if you are flying somewhere.

The feature bears resemblance to the Siri virtual assistant on Apple's iPhone.

Jelly Bean will also come with the ability to share photos by tapping two phones together.

Jaw-dropping switch saves 'Obamacare'

In his White House memoir, ?Courage and Consequence,? Karl Rove recalls being the lone non-lawyer among the group of George W. Bush aides who initially interviewed John Roberts for the Supreme Court in 2005. Rove asked Roberts to go back in history to name the justice whom he most revered. Roberts? answer, Robert Jackson, intrigued and reassured Rove. When appointed in 1941, Jackson was serving as Franklin Roosevelt?s attorney general and had been expected to be a pro-New Deal rubber-stamp on the court. But, as Rove put it, Jackson ?instead demonstrated a fidelity to the Constitution that Roberts admired.?

Thursday, in a jaw-dropping turnabout worthy of Justice Jackson, Roberts provided the swing vote in a 5-to-4 decision that upheld the constitutionality of almost all of Obamacare, the president?s signature legislative achievement. While an army of armchair court watchers expected Justice Anthony Kennedy to determine the fate of the Affordable Care Act (a recent Time cover called him ?The Decider?), it was Roberts who took his fidelity to the Constitution in an ideologically surprising direction. Kennedy voted with three other conservative justices to overturn the health insurance mandate at the heart of the law.

Constitutional law seminars and unlicensed political psychologists will spend years speculating about Roberts? motivations in joining the liberal bloc in probably the most important Supreme Court decision since Bush v. Gore in 2000. While we may wait decades to know for certain, it does seem plausible that Roberts may have been partly triggered by a desire to prevent the court from being seen as overtly political. Polls showing public respect for the Supreme Court at a quarter-century low reflect the growing view that the justices pursue partisan agendas.

One of the most important passages in Roberts? majority decision was the chief justice?s assertion: ?We do not consider whether the act embodied sound policies. That judgment is entrusted to the Nation?s elected leaders. We ask only whether Congress has the power under the Constitution to enact the challenge provisions.?

In short, if you want a national referendum on the health-care law, then the proper arena is the 2012 campaign?and not the inner sanctums of the Supreme Court.

The majority opinion in the health care case points up the inadequacy of the political clich?s used in the heat of an election year to describe the Supreme Court. Phrases like ?strict constructionist? and ?not making law from the bench? do not clarify complex Supreme Court opinions like Thursday?s ruling. Romney?s campaign website declares, ?As president, Mitt will nominate judges in the mold of Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Scalia, Thomas and Alito.? There?s only one problem with this formulation: Roberts went in one direction and Scalia, Thomas and Alito went in the opposite on the constitutionality of the health care bill.

Obama?s own ability at prophecy is limited, as well. In 2005, the former constitutional law professor declared in a Senate address that he was opposing Roberts? nomination to the Supreme Court because ?I ultimately have to give more weight to his deeds and overarching political philosophy ? than to the assuring words he provided me in our meeting.?

While Obama has sharply disagreed with major decisions of the Roberts Court (particularly the anything-goes Citizen United ruling on campaign finance), it is tempting to wonder if the president now feels that he misjudged the man who saved his legislative legacy.

It is almost part of the job description of a president that he will make, at least, one blunder when picking Supreme Court justices. Harry Truman called one of his nominees, Tom Clark, a ?damn fool from Texas.? When George H.W. Bush tapped New Hampshire jurist David Souter in 1990, the president never expected that he would be reinforcing the court?s liberal wing. Now it is Roberts who has refused to stay in his pre-determined ideological cubbyhole.

With four current justices over the age of 70, it is likely that whoever is elected president this November will get an opportunity to put his stamp on the Supreme Court. But the potential for Lucy-and-the-football surprises endures. About the only ways a president can achieve some measure of certainty about the court are either to nominate fire-breathing ideologues like Antonin Scalia or political cronies like Abe Fortas, who kept open a back channel to Lyndon Johnson during his brief tenure as a justice. But even the Scalia precedent no longer works, because anyone with a sharply articulated judicial philosophy probably could not make it through today?s hyper-partisan Senate.

As for the health care law, its major provisions remain on schedule to take effect in 2014. Even a President Romney may find it difficult to reverse history, as he would have to face down a filibuster threat by Senate Democrats to get a repeal bill through Congress. (There are, however, administrative gambits that Romney could use to eviscerate Obamacare if Congress proves balky.) That?s why the Supreme Court seemed like such a beguiling short cut for conservatives who loathe Obamacare.

It?s also why back in 2005 Karl Rove may have badly misinterpreted John Roberts? stated intention to be an independent jurist like Robert Jackson.

Web World: Pinterest Not Manly Enough? Try These Sites, Bro ...

(CNN) ? Manliness, metaphorically embodied these days by facial hair, grilling meat and building domestic ?man caves,? is now carving its own space online.

Look around. The line of what is and isn?t masculine is blurring, whether it is through manscaping, as shown in Morgan Spurlock?s new documentary ?Mansome? or barbecue chefs such as Elizabeth Karmel expertly wielding tongs.

This trend may be rightly celebrated for breaking gender stereotypes. But as the ?mantuary? for hanging with the bros gets invaded by scented candles, some entrepreneurs are fighting back with new websites that cater to stereotypically manly interests such as cars, sports, tech toys and bachelor living.

They have names such as Dudepins, Manteresting, PunchPin, Gentlemint and Dartitup, and they claim to target the male demographic not just in content but also in utilization. They?ve all launched in the past six months, and their inspiration appears to be the skyrocketing popularity of Pinterest, a virtual pinboard where users post, or ?pin,? images of their favorite things.

Unlike Pinterest, however, these sites have fewer photos of wedding dresses and more pics of beards, babes, guns, Harleys and bottles of whiskey.

Pinterest has more than 20 million users, and a survey last spring found they spend more time there per month than users of any other social network except Tumblr and Facebook. Considering those numbers, and that Pinterest has been valued at $1.5 billion, and it?s no surprise that similar websites such as Pinspire, Clipix and Stylepin have popped up.

But Pinterest and its copycat sites are largely populated by women. A February survey by Visual.ly found that women comprise 83% of Pinterest users. A quick browse through its most popular pins and its About section (?People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes and organize their favorite recipes?) seems to reinforce this gender imbalance.

Brandon Harris, co-founder of Dartitup, said that when he first played around with his fiancee?s Pinterest account, he appreciated the concept.

?I loved what it did and I loved the features, but I didn?t like the content,? he said. ?The content is not geared towards a guy. I am not interested in cupcakes or puppies. But I am interested in cars and gadgets.?

Not that there aren?t any men pinning. But Ricardo Poupada, co-founder of AskMen, said that when his online men?s magazine started using Pinterest, they noticed that there wasn?t a strong male presence. ?There?s still that perception that it is a female-centric site,? he said.

?Manly? alternatives

Enter sites such as Manteresting.

?We were thinking of mimicking the [Pinterest] business concept but catering to the male demographic,? said Brandon Patchin, who co-founded Manteresting with Jesse Michelsen. ?Jesse and I, we are intentional in our naming of our website. We needed to be divisive.?

While Manteresting has managed to rack up more than 2 million page views since it started in February, the plan is not to declare war against Pinterest, Patchin said.

So what makes up a manly image bookmarking website?

Let?s start with the look. Manteresting?s layout swaps Pinterest?s cursive red title on a cream background with a black, block-letter title and the tag ?Interesting.Man.Things? on a dark steel background. Dartitup goes for a dark navy blue with white lettering, and Gentlemint opts for an elegant black-and-white theme with a moustachioed logo.

Then there?s the testosterone-laden choice of words. Instead of ?Pin It,? users on these websites can ?Nail It? (Manteresting), ?Dart It? (Dartitup) and ?Save to Your Mint? (Gentlemint). Dudepins? slogans are ?Dudes like sharing stuff? and ?Man Up. Sign Up. Pin Up.?

The founders of Manteresting, Dartitup and Gentlemint were all quick to say that they don?t emphasize photos of women in bikinis or tolerate offensive content. Their most popular image subjects range from food to technology to sports to memes to bachelor pads, they said.

Embracing stereotypes?

Glen Stansberry, co-founder of Gentlemint ? ?a mint of manly things? ? said he felt no pressure to set a certain bar for manliness.

?How do we know what?s manly? We really don?t,? he said. ?There is no editorial guideline, so people interpret it their own way.?

Each site embraces ?manliness? in a different way.

Dartitup prides itself as ?a guy?s night out? and pairs you up with similar users during registration. It also has a ?Challenges? section where users are asked to dart images in response to a challenge like finding ?something Chuck Norris cannot defeat.?

Manteresting gives you the option to ?bump? or ?shame? an image to the ?Top Voted? or ?Wall of Shame? sections of the site. Gentlemint has ?Collections? that allow users to group images in whatever form they like as opposed to categorizing them.

AskMen?s Poupada believes men share content differently than women and are more likely to share that which is representative of stereotypical male interests.

?It?s more about what your stuff says about you,? he said. ?The sharing is very much in line with what society dictates to us. If a guy talks about calorie counting, he will be ostracized.?

Poupada warns that the content on these niche websites could perpetuate stereotypes about what men are interested in. He?s not alone. Gawker?s Adrian Chen also mocked the idea of ?Pinterest for men? in a recent article and suggested men are threatened by the female-dominated website.

?Why do we need these sad virtual man caves?? he wrote. ?Get over yourselves, dudes. Maybe you?ll even learn a little about closet organizing.?

Manteresting?s Patchin says his team has been accused of being ?homophobic or misogynistic or sexist.? But he points out that Manteresting has no restrictions against women joining, and that his site?s 45,000 images of bacon doughnuts, basement game rooms and movie posters offer proof that there is a market for such content.

Harris of Dartitup says his site has received invite requests from women and that they are more than welcome to join.

?But we said from the start, this is a service that guys will like,? he said.

More men on Pinterest

This raises a question: Would it be so terrible if Pinterest remains dominated by women and female-oriented content?

Mary Elizabeth Williams, a staff writer at Salon.com, wrote in a recent article that Pinterest?s gender gap reveals how ?conservative ideas about gender find themselves reproduced online.?

But she believes that may not be such a bad thing.

?Within a seemingly tame array of cute animals and wedding ideas, nearly 20 years into Web culture, we have nevertheless somehow managed to create something formidable ? at long last, the Net?s first true woman-centric blockbuster,? she wrote.

Last week, Alexandra Lange wrote on The New Yorker?s culture blog that she fears Pinterest?s founders might ?push the flowers off screen? because ?women?s interests are coming on ?a little strong? for an Important Social-Media Platform,? she said.

She later added, ?We should be long past women?s clubs, but if Pinterest remains one, let it be the men?s loss.?

The scales of gender balance might already be leveling.

A recent Mashable slide show featured men with hundreds of thousands of followers on Pinterest. And according to Visual.ly, a data visualization community, 56% of Pinterest users in the UK are men.

Poupada predicts that Pinterest is in a pre-evolutionary stage, just as ?Facebook was once considered for college students.? The bookmarking site may attract a more balanced group of users once it tweaks its branding, he says.

?There will always be places to be gender-specific,? he said. ?There will always be the [male] equivalent of Pinterest. But the beauty of the Web is you can never stop anyone else from joining. The medium doesn?t allow it.?

What do you think? Do you find Pinterest too ?girly? or do you think it is fine the way it is? Should Pinterest become more gender neutral? Would you use these manly alternatives? Let us know in the comments.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 $99 oncontract deal expands to Best Buy, Gamestop

The Xbox 360 pilot program's breaking out of its Microsoft Store-only confines and heading to more ubiquitous electronics retailers Best Buy and GameStop starting today. If you'll remember, Redmond intro'd this subsidized plan last month, giving prospective buyers within reach of one of its 16 participating locations the ability to purchase a 4GB version of the console for $99 with a two-year commitment. In exchange for those contract chains, gamers forking over the $15 monthly fee not only get the privilege of owning the console at a discounted, upfront cost, but also Gold level membership to Xbox Live. We'd caution you to think twice and do some hard math before you hand over the plastic, though. Tempting as that low-price barrier to entry is -- in total, a $460 value -- you might be better off grabbing this console outright at $420 or less.

Syrian downing of Turkish plane: a hostile act? (+video)

Syria brought down a Turkish plane with two pilots aboard. Questions remain about the incident and the Turkish response. Leaders say, "Turkey cannot endure it in silence."

By Suzan Fraser,?Associated Press / June 23, 2012

In this file photo, a Turkish pilot salutes before take-off at an air base in Konya, Turkey. Turkish President Abdullah Gul said, his country would take "necessary" action against Syria for the downing of a Turkish military jet, but suggested that the aircraft may have unintentionally violated the Syrian airspace.

Syria said Saturday that it shot down a Turkish military jet because the aircraft had violated its airspace, but Turkey threatened retaliatory action as it searched for its two missing pilots.

Both sides signaled they do not want to escalate an incident that has the potential to explode into a regional conflict, but the downing of the Turkish reconnaissance plane on Friday was a dramatic sign that the violence gripping Syria increasingly is spreading outside its borders.

Tensions already were high between Syria and NATO-member Turkey. The neighbors used to be allies before the Syrian revolt began in March 2011, but Turkey has become one of the strongest critics of the Syrian regime's brutal response to the country's uprising and is playing host to civilian and military Syrian opposition groups.

Germany and Iraq urged Turkey and Syria to remain calm and not let the unrest in Syria become a wider conflict in the area.

In a telephone interview with Turkish TV news channel A Haber on Saturday, Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said the downing of Turkey's F-4 plane was an "accident, not an attack."

"An unidentified object entered our air space and unfortunately as a result it was brought down. It was understood only later that it was a Turkish plane," A Haber quoted Makdissi as saying in a translation of the interview. "There was no hostile act against Turkey whatsoever. It was just an act of defense for our sovereignty."

The plane went down in the Mediterranean Sea near Syria, and its two Turkish pilots remain missing.

"What is important now is that Turkey and Syria are working together to find the pilots," Makdissi said.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul and other officials said Saturday that their government is trying to assess the exact circumstances of the incident and would take unspecified retaliatory steps accordingly. Gul conceded that Turkish aircraft may have unintentionally violated Syrian airspace.

It was not clear if Turkey was contemplating military retaliation, increased sanctions, or other possible steps, including demands for compensation or an apology. But Faruk Celik, the Turkish Labor and Social Security Minister, said his nation would retaliate "either in the diplomatic field or give other types of response."

"Even if we assume that there was a violation of Syria's airspace ? though the situation is still not clear ? the Syrian response cannot be to bring down the plane," Celik told reporters. "The incident is unacceptable. Turkey cannot endure it in silence."

Turkey has joined nations such as the United States in saying that Syrian President Bashar Assad should step down because of the uprising in his country that has killed thousands of people. Turkey also has set up refugee camps on its border for more than 32,000 Syrians who have fled the fighting.

Fabricio Werdum snaps Mike Russow?s win streak at UFC 147

Fabricio Werdum made his case to join the crowded top of the UFC's heavyweight division with a knockout of Mike Russow at UFC 147 in Brazil on Saturday night.

Werdum bloodied Russow's face early in the clinch. He leveled Russow with an uppercut, then followed with several punches and hammerfists until the fight was stopped at 2:28 in the first round.

As the crowd chanted his nickname, "Vai Cavalo," Werdum jumped on top of the cage to celebrate and nearly fell off. Once he recovered, Werdum asked for a title shot against Junior dos Santos.

"I respect 'Cigano,' but I'm ready for him," Werdum said after the bout.

Werdum was knocked out by dos Santos when they fought in 2008. Since then, Werdum moved to Strikeforce, where he beat Fedor Emelianenko, but lost to Alistair Overeem. He now has two wins back in the UFC.

This is Russow's first loss since he was submitted by Sergei Kharitonov in 2007.

Live: London 2012 Olympic torch in Greater Manchester

Showing comments 1 to 3 and replies | View All

Any idea on what time the olympic torch is expected on Bury old Road/Leicester Road? It passes my aunts street twice.

It will be sometime during the day - more than once but certainly not more than three times.

It would have been more meaningful if only one torch had been used and then used to light the big one at the Olympic stadium. However,it doesn't mean any more to me if it would have been in Australia,USA or China!

don,t worry no local people will be carrying the torch . its a disgrace

Egypt army talks tough as Tahrir protests

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's military rulers dismissed complaints from protesters on Friday that it was entrenching its rule and blamed the Muslim Brotherhood's presidential candidate for stirring up emotions that drew thousands onto Cairo's Tahrir Square.

The Islamist candidate, Mohamed Morsy, shot back that the generals were defying the democratic will of the people and said protests would go on. But he stopped short of repeating a claim to have won last weekend's election, urging simply a rapid announcement of the result, and praised the army as "patriotic".

In a brusque four-minute statement read on state television as Egyptians returned from weekly prayers - and as the revolutionary bastion of Tahrir was chanting for democracy - the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) made clear it had no plan to heed calls to cancel a decree extending its powers or reverse its dissolution of the new, Islamist-led parliament.

"The issuance of the supplementary constitutional decree was necessitated by the needs of administering the affairs of the state during this critical period in the history of our nation," the off-screen announcer said, in the bureaucratic language favored by the generals who pushed aside brother officer Hosni Mubarak last year to appease the angry millions on the streets.

In what were menacing tones for the army's old adversary the Muslim Brotherhood, SCAF said people were free to protest - but only if they did not disrupt daily life.

At Tahrir, the broad traffic interchange by the Nile in central Cairo was filled with makeshift tents offering shade from the midday sun, hawkers offering an array of goods from tea to "I Love Tahrir Square" T-shirts. Many knelt in prayer during the weekly service. Large groups of pious Islamists were bussed in from the provinces by their parties.

The crowd chanted and waved Egyptian flags.

The deadlock between Egypt's two strongest forces raised grave doubts on the prospects for consensual democracy, though some see possible compromise, if Morsy does become president.

The SCAF statement read: "Anticipating the announcement of the presidential election results before they are announced officially is unjustifiable, and is one of the main causes of division and confusion prevailing the political arena."

It also said the army had no power to repeal the dissolution of parliament, saying that was down to judges who ruled some of January's election rules unconstitutional. Critics say the judges were appointed under Mubarak and are not impartial.

PROTESTS

The Brotherhood is mounting protest vigils on town squares to demand the reversal of the decree and the dissolution. It also fears a delay in announcing the result of the presidential election indicates an attempt to cheat - though opponents say it is the Islamists who are not playing fair.

Morsy and former general Ahmed Shafik both say they believe they won the run-off ballot. But it is Morsy's declaration of victory within hours of polls closing - far more than Shafik's later, more cautious statements - which has driven debate about underhand tactics in a country long used to vote-rigging.

The delay in publication of results, due on Thursday but not now expected until at least Saturday, has heightened anxiety on all sides, although all sides say they will protest peacefully.

Morsy told a news conference he would continue to reject SCAF's decree, which was issued as polls closed on Sunday, two days after the constitutional court gave the military grounds to dissolve parliament: "The constitutional declaration clearly implies attempts by the military council to restrict the incoming president," he said. "This we totally reject."

But with no obvious resolution in sight to the stand-off, Morsy also made conciliatory references to the army: "There is no problem between us and our patriotic armed forces," he said.

"We do not agree to the issuing of the constitutional decree and neither do the people. Why do we need a supplementary declaration when we are going to draft a new constitution?"

After the blunt warning about declarations of election victory, Morsy notably did not repeat his claim to have won, but called instead for a speedy announcement to end the uncertainty.

In a country where virtually no one can remember an election that was not rigged before last year, trust is low, not least among Brotherhood officials, many of whom, like Morsy, were jailed under Mubarak for their political activities.

The same electoral commission that handed an improbable 90 percent of a November 2010 parliamentary vote to Mubarak's supporters - a result which fuelled the protests that brought him down a few weeks later - sits in judgment on the new presidency.

SCARE TACTIC

While many of the urban liberals who began the uprising against Mubarak 17 months ago are uneasy about the electoral success of the Islamists, the prospect of Shafik winning, or of the army retaining power behind an impotent President Morsy, would for them mean the failure of their revolution.

Hassan Nafaa, a political analyst and critic of Mubarak, said: "The military council's statement is intended to scare the people and quell the revolutionary spirit of the nation through the firm authoritarian tone in which the statement was delivered. But this will not work because all politically aware civilians refuse the military's stewardship over the state."

Among mostly Islamist protesters, sentiment was also firm.

"This is a classic counter revolution that will only be countered by the might of protesters," said Safwat Ismail, 43, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood who came from the Nile Delta. "I am staying in the square until the military steps down."

Mahmoud Mohammed, a bearded, 31-year-old marine engineer from Alexandria among a group from the more fundamentalist Salafist movement camping on the square, insisted they were not looking for a battle, but wanted to see democracy installed.

"The people elected a parliament and they put it in the rubbish bin. We need the army to hand over," he said, adding: "No one came here for a fight. We need democracy."

Though tension is real across the country, many of Egypt's 82 million people are weary of turmoil and economic crisis, so it is unclear how large protests might become - though the Brotherhood alone has formidable reserves and capacities.

On Friday, most people appeared to be staying at home and passing Friday's Muslim weekend as normal, though once the fierce sun goes down, gatherings might grow.

Events of the past week, which also saw a renewal of the power of military police to arrest civilians, have unnerved Western allies, notably the United States which has long been the key sponsor of the Egyptian armed forces but now says it wants to see them hand power to civilians.

Adding to unease, Mubarak is himself back in the news, being transferred to a military hospital on Tuesday evening from the prison where he began a life sentence this month.

Military and security sources have given a confusion of accounts about his condition, from "clinically dead" at one point, to being on life support after a stroke to "stabilizing". Many Egyptians suspect his fellow generals may be exaggerating his illness to get their old comrade out of jail.
