Syrian rebels intensify rocket attacks into Lebanon

Rebels fighting the Syrian government are shelling villages on the Lebanese side of the border in order to curb a Lebanese group's efforts to help the Syrian regime.

The increase in rocket fire over the past week comes amid heavy clashes in Syria?between the Syrian?Army and mainly Sunni rebel fighters opposed to President Bashar al-Assad's regime. The rebels?are fighting to retain control of a string of villages located west of Qusayr, a strategically-placed Sunni-populated town five miles north of the border with Lebanon that lies in rebel hands.

Qusayr lies close to the key highway that links Damascus to the coastal city of Tartous and passes through?Homs, Syria's third largest city. If the Syrian army is able to recapture Qusayr, it will strengthen the regime's grip on the highway and sever the logistical supply chain between opposition-supporting areas of Lebanon and Homs.

On the southern edge of Hermel, a group of youths scrambled over a rocky mound and craned their necks to gaze across scattered houses and scrubland to the north. Anxious motorists paused to ask bystanders?what was happening.

"Another rocket has just struck somewhere nearby," said a young man standing on the side of the street gazing as other residents hurried indoors.

Syrian rebels issue threats

The rebel Free Syrian Army accuses the Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah of fighting alongside Syrian Army troops and has vowed to escalate its attacks against Hezbollah in Lebanon's northern Bekaa Valley. The Voice of Lebanon Radio reported Sunday that Jabhat al-Nusra, the Al-Qaeda-affiliated rebel faction, has warned that it will attack Hezbollah throughout Lebanon, including the party's stronghold in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

The Syrian opposition National Coalition Sunday urged Hezbollah to immediately withdraw from Syria, warning that the group's involvement in Syria's conflict "could drag Lebanon and the region into an open-ended conflict with disastrous consequences."

Terrorists may leave 'digital breadcrumbs' for investigators

AP Photo/Bob Leonard

This Monday, April 15, 2013 photo provided by Bob Leonard shows second from left, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was dubbed Suspect No. 1 and third from left, Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, who was dubbed Suspect No. 2 in the Boston Marathon bombings by law enforcement. This image was taken approximately 10-20 minutes before the blast.

By Bob Sullivan and Rosa Golijan, NBC News

The same Internet that makes it easy for terrorists and killers to research targets and stock up on ammunition also makes it easier for them to get caught, thanks to "digital breadcrumbs" that are hard to erase.?While Dzhokhar Tsarnaev ? the 19-year-old man accused in the Boston Marathon bombing that killed three people and injured more than 170 ? remains in serious condition (and unable to speak)?at Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, authorities are hunting for clues in many places, both physical and virtual.

"The big thing they are trying to determine is the radicalization," Mark Rasch, former head of the Justice Department's computer crime unit and now an independent consultant at MarkDRasch.com, explained to NBC News. "How did he become radicalized?" Rasch believes authorities are employing digital forensics in an attempt to answer this question. They are likely looking at laptops, desktops and tablets, checking social networks and browser histories, and searching for evidence that Dzhokhar or his 26-year-old brother, Tamerlan ? killed in a firefight with police on Thursday night ? researched Web pages about bomb making.

"The first place you find digital breadcrumbs is in deleted or cached files," Rasch explains. "The second is in misplaced trust relationships. When you tell someone what you are doing online, say in email, that person has records, too. And even if you deleted it, they might forget to delete it."

Investigators will have to act quickly though, especially if the Tsarnaevs operated as part of a larger group.?"There are probably other people out there frantically deleting files,"?Rasch?says, "so this stuff has short shelf life."

Looking into the brothers' online social connections could also potentially yield solid clues. A YouTube account apparently set up by Tamerlan has come to light. It includes several Islamic extremist videos organized into two playlists ? "Islam," set up six months ago, and "terrorists," set up five months ago. On Twitter, Dzhokhar posted, "Ain't no love in the heart of the city, stay safe people" in the hours after the Boston Marathon bombing ? and a day later said he was "stress-free." Investigators may even?follow the shakier leads, too, like the alleged sightings of the brothers on Russia's vKontakte social network.

John Tlumacki / Boston Globe / Getty Images Contributor

Police officers with their guns drawn hear the second explosion down the street. The first explosion knocked down a runner at the finish line of the 117th Boston Marathon.

But combing social media may prove to be a dead end. "Remember (Dzhokhar's) roommates had no idea what was going on," Rasch cautions, "so the fact that people are friends with (the brothers) online, or follow them on Twitter, could be meaningless."

In the case of physical computer equipment,?wiping a hard drive, or even attempting to destroy it, may not leave information entirely unaccessible. In the home shared by Adam Lanza ? the gunman who killed 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. ? and his mother, who he also killed, authorities discovered a heavily damaged computer and hard drives which had been removed and subjected to additional damage.

Experts told NBC News at that time?of?the?discovery?that while certain types of damage could render chances of data recovery?"pretty much nonexistent," authorities would have a shot as long as the platters ? the disks on which data lives ? are only partially chipped or scratched. (Efforts by an FBI lab to extract information from Lanza's hard drives have produced nothing of value, NBC News?reported in February.)?

Norway gunman Anders Behring Breivik, who confessed in 2011 to killing 93 people, left behind a notable trail of digital breadcrumbs.?An Internet diary included entries such as: "It would have saved me a lot of hassle if I could just 'borrow' a cup of sugar and 3kg of C4 (explosive) from my dear neighbor." Further Internet postings, online discussions and attempts to join radical groups on Facebook provided further clues.

And of course, cellphone text messages can also be used to mount a case against an accused killer. Suspected Aurora, Colo., shooter James Holmes ? who reportedly used the Web to stockpile over 6,000 rounds of ammunition ? sent threatening texts to a university psychiatrist, said the doctor when she testified in court in early April.

However the facts stack up against the Tsarnaev brothers, it's clear to an expert like Rasch that they could have done more to cover their tracks ? but didn't.

"If you wanted to conceal your identity, you would use throwaway accounts online," Rasch said. "It's easy to conceal what you are doing. If I wanted to look up how pressure-cooker bombs worked, I would never use my own computer or my own accounts."

"They did very little to conceal their identities?...?just look at the way they planted the bombs and planned their escape,"?he?concluded.?"That likely means there will be a lot found out online."

5 snowboarders killed in Colo. avalanche ID'd

DENVER (AP) ? Authorities have released the names of five Colorado snowboarders killed over the weekend in the state's deadliest avalanche in more than 50 years.

Clear Creek County Sheriff Don Krueger said search and rescue crews recovered the men's bodies from a backcountry area on Loveland Pass several hours after Saturday afternoon's slide, which was about 600 feet wide and eight feet deep. All of the men were equipped with avalanche beacons.

The sheriff on Sunday identified the victims as Christopher Peters, 32, of Lakewood; Joseph Timlin, 32, of Gypsum; Ryan Novack, 33, of Boulder; Ian Lanphere, 36, of Crested Butte; and Rick Gaukel, 33, of Estes Park. A sixth snowboarder was buried and survived, but authorities have not released his name or condition.

The Denver Post reported Sunday the group of men, all experienced in extreme terrain, were participating in a snowboarding event called the Rocky Mountain High Backcountry Bash to raise money for the Colorado Avalanche Information Center when the slide occurred.

Snowboarder Mike Bennett of Dillon told the newspaper he dug through hard-packed snow to help free the sole survivor before finding two other snowboarders buried about two feet below the surface.

"They were wrapped around each other, below a patch of trees," he said.

Bennett said four of the victims were snowboarders and one was a skier.

The slide occurred on a spring weekend when many skiers and snowboarders took advantage of late season snowfall in the Rocky Mountains. Loveland Pass, which rises to an elevation of 11,990 feet about 60 miles west of Denver, is popular among backcountry skiers and snowboarders, but dangerous conditions are common in the area even in the spring.

Ethan Greene, director of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, said a systemic weakness in the snowpack was exacerbated by heavy snow that fell on the pass over the past week and a half.

"It's been something that's been giving us problems all winter," he said. "But the snow storms that have been coming in this spring have just created a large slab on top of it."

Forecasters for the avalanche center warned skiers and hikers again Sunday of potentially dangerous backcountry conditions, saying the new snow has pushed the old snowpack to the breaking point.

On Thursday, a 38-year-old snowboarder died in an avalanche south of Colorado's Vail Pass. Eagle County sheriff's officials said the man and another snowboarder likely triggered the slide after a friend on a snowmobile dropped them off at the top of Avalanche Bowl.

According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, 11 people have died in avalanches in Colorado this winter season.

Greene said Saturday's was the deadliest in Colorado since 1962, when seven people were killed in a slide that wiped out several homes in the town of Twin Lakes near Independence Pass.

U.S. avalanche deaths climbed steeply after 1990, averaging 24 a year, as new gear became available for backcountry travel. Until then, avalanches rarely claimed more than a handful of lives each season in records going back to 1950.

Samsung Display HQ searched by police in probe over stolen LG OLED tech

We had hoped that the dispute between Samsung and LG over their OLED tech would be resolved soon but recent developments suggest that may not be the case. Bloomberg reports Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency investigators entered the Samsung Display HQ in Asan as they look into the possibility that LG partners may have leaked secrets of its technology. A Samsung spokesperson denied any involvement, and an LG spokesperson is quoted saying the police made the allegation themselves. This comes after Yonhap News reported last month that LG accused Samsung of illegally using its patented technology and demanded Samsung Display and Samsung Electronics pay for the rights. While these two continue to duke it out legally, we have yet to see an OLED HDTV from either arrive in the US and it seems like it may be quite some time until that happens.

Anthony scores 41, Knicks win 11th straight

NEW YORK (AP) ? Carmelo Anthony gave fans his own reason to celebrate 40.

On the night the Knicks honored the 40th anniversary of their last championship team, Anthony finished with 41 points, tying a franchise record with this third straight 40-point game, and New York beat the Milwaukee Bucks 101-83 for its 11th straight victory.

Anthony, who had 50 points and 40 in his previous two games, equaled Bernard King's 1984-85 mark. New York matched the third-longest winning streak in franchise history.

Anthony increased his scoring average to 28.3 points, right behind league leader Kevin Durant's 28.4 heading into their matchup Sunday at Oklahoma City.

"It's April, I guess. It's April. It's time to go," Anthony said.

J.R. Smith added 30 points for the Knicks, who used a huge third quarter to turn around the game after a lackluster first half on the night they saluted their 1972-73 NBA championship team with a ceremony at halftime.

"That's the last team here to win a championship and that's what we want to accomplish," said Tyson Chandler. "It's a brotherhood. We've got to get into that brotherhood. We want to follow in their footsteps."

Brandon Jennings scored 25 points for the Bucks and JJ Redick had 18.

After scoring just 36 points in the first half and trailing by nine, the Knicks poured in 42 in the third quarter, with Anthony scoring 18 and Jason Kidd ending the period with a 59-foot heave at the buzzer.

"That was a big third quarter for us," Kidd said. "Everything was going in. When you have the legends in the house, you want to play well."

Milwaukee led 57-48 after Jennings hit a jumper with 8:46 left in the third before the Knicks scored the next 16 points.

Anthony started the streak with a layup, free throw and short jumper. Smith followed with a 3-pointer and Anthony's long jumper with 6:25 to go gave New York a 58-57 lead, its first since late in the first quarter.

The streak continued with a 3-pointer from Smith and concluded with Anthony's 3-pointer with 4:47 left to put the Knicks ahead 64-57.

"When I first got to Denver, we were kind of a high-scoring duo," Smith said. "But other than that, this is definitely the best its felt, us jelling together."

The Bucks finally scored on Jennings' layup with 4:26 left, but Raymond Felton hit a 3-pointer and Smith followed with two more as the Knicks ran off to a 78-66 lead after three quarters.

"We just turned it up another gear," Felton said. "Melo got hot. J.R. got hot. I got hot. Everybody was really involved. When the game is like that, it's really fun."

The Bucks got as close as 87-81 on Redick's 3-pointer with 4:39 remaining in the game, but the Knicks scored the next 11 points and ended the game on a 14-2 run.

"They got it going in the third," Bucks coach Jim Boylan said. "I thought our defense was good in the first two quarters. It was a two-man show out there, Carmelo and J.R.

"You know Carmelo's been on a tear and obviously continued again tonight. So it's tough. We were battling down there but he started making some shots, they got out in transition a few times and we just couldn't seem to slow them down."

Milwaukee took its biggest lead of the game, 44-34, on Jennings' two free throws with 1:05 remaining in the second quarter.

The Knicks' 36 points at the half were the team's lowest since scoring 36 against the Bulls on Jan. 11.

"We weren't playing hard. The energy wasn't there," Felton said. "You don't want to lose the streak, especially not at home. You don't want to lose in front of the legends."

The teams were tied at 19 after the first quarter, the Knicks' lowest total in the opening period since scoring 18 against Indiana on Feb. 20.

Felton finished with nine points for the Knicks, while Anthony (14), Chandler (10) and Smith (10) each recorded double-digit rebounds.

Monta Ellis added 11 points for the Bucks and Larry Sanders had 12 rebounds.

"Just to know that (1972-73) team's history and know what they were able to do and to see most of the guys come back here was an inspiration," Anthony said. "They're fans of ours just as much as we're fans of theirs."

And New Yorkers now have reason to be fans of both.

Notes: The Knicks' last loss was a 93-80 defeat to the Clippers on March 17 in Los Angeles. ... The Knicks have won five straight over the Bucks, including all three games this season. The Knicks' last season sweep in the series was during the 1999-00 season. Milwaukee's last win in the series came on March 9, 2012.

Nuclear Plant Leaking Contaminated Water In Japan

TOKYO, April 6 (Reuters) - As much as 120 tons of radioactive water may have leaked from a storage tank at Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, contaminating the surrounding ground, Tokyo Electric Power Co said on Saturday.
The power company has yet to discover the cause of the leak, detected on one of seven tanks that store water used to cool the plants reactors, a spokesman for the company, Masayuki Ono, said at a press briefing.
The company plans to pump 13,000 cubic meters of water remaining in the tank to other vessels over the next two weeks.
Water from the leaking tank, which located 800 meters from the coast, is not expected to reach the sea, Kyodo news wire reported, earlier, citing unidentified officials from the utility.
The company did not say how long the tank had been leaking.
The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi plant has faced a range of problems with controlling ground water and maintaining the massive cooling system built to keep the reactors stable.
The power company said on Friday said it lost the ability to cool radioactive fuel rods in one of the plant's reactors for about three hours. It was the second failure of the system to circulate seawater to cool spent fuel rods at the plant in the past three weeks.
The facility was the site of the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in March 2011 when a magnitude 9.0 earthquake triggered a tsunami that destroyed back-up generators and disabled its cooling system. Three of the reactors melted down.
The storage tanks, pits excavated at the site in the wake of the disaster, are lined with water proof sheets meant to keep the contaminated water from leaking into the soil
Work to decommission the plant is projected to take decades to complete. (Reporting by Tim Kelly; Editing by Michael Perry)

The linkdown: A stylish dude, an icon(ic) bag and 'Haiku-ization'

By Rob Walker

As the work-week winds down and your colleagues clump around the water cooler to yap about the season premier of ?Mad Men,? ignore them! Check out this stuff instead. More fun.

The BuzzFeed-ication of Mainstream Media: NPR presents ?67 Years of Potato Chip Innovation, In 5 Animated GIFs.? Well, why not?

The Haiku-ization of Mainstream Media: ?Whimsy is not a quality we usually associate with computer programs,? announces Times Haiku, which is ?a Tumblr blog of haikus found within The New York Times.?? I think haiku is overrated, but I feel obliged to pass this on at least in part because it?s a project created by an actual Times person (not some smart-aleck third-party code genius) and whimsy is not a quality we usually associate with the Times. Images of the Week: Fascinating street art by Felice Varini, whose meticulous multi-building murals only make sense from a specific angle. When documented, they look like manipulated pictures. ?Life imitates Photoshop,? as a friend of mine once said.

Easy: Do It: I?ve often argued that much of the best stuff on YouTube is decades-old material that has somehow found its way, super-belatedly, online. A case in point: The short (delightfully weird) film ?The Discipline of DE? (or ?do easy?), by Gus Van Sant, based on a William Burroughs story. You're Sitting on A Gold Mine: The #1 Action to Recharge Your ...

Simply put, you are CRAZY to not take advantage of the blog on your website. Absolutely CRAZY!!

Are you frustrated you aren?t getting more traffic to your website?

Do you see friends sharing other people?s content and wish they would share yours?

How nice would it be to not just get more traffic, but build your list faster, sell more product and be ?in demand??

This is ALL a result of regular blogging.

My goal is to blow your mind with three things:

  • All the ways your blog will supercharge your website and get you massive results
  • How easy it is to get started and keep going
  • A secret weapon that could blow the roof off your website

Supercharge Your Website with Blogging

Blogging is the heart and blood of your website. It?s what keeps your business flowing and thriving.

Each time you publish a blog post, you prove to Google that you are here to educate and inspire your following on a regular basis. Google will reward your efforts by ranking you higher in its search engine for the topics you write about. The more consistently you blog over a longer period of time, the better you continue to get rewarded. It is CRAZY how much traffic I get to my website by writing just one post?per week.

I didn?t?start with just one a week though. In the beginning, I wrote 2, 3?even 4 a week. I had heard that something magical happens when a blog achieves 100 posts. I wanted to hit that goal ASAP. I hit it, and I saw a lot more traffic flow in. I built the traffic up to 10,000 page views?per month and scaled back to once a week to focus on product development and scaling my business. It?s now a well-oiled machine.

As Google ranks you higher, something very cool happens. Sites with huge followings find and SHARE your posts! The editor in chief of Slate magazine found one of my posts and linked to it from within his blog post. I got 1,000 new visitors to my website overnight!

As you continue to publish great content, people share your blog posts on their sites or -even better -?social media. If you think a blog post rocks, you?d share it on Facebook, Google+, Twitter and LinkedIn. Everyone in your network would then see that post, read it, opt-in to that website, buy products and the cycle continues. People advertise you for FREE because your content rocks!

You Can?t Afford NOT to Get Serious About Blogging!

But, I don?t have time! With all due respect, I call BS. You can make time for a task this critical to your online success. If you want the chance to get 1,000 new visitors to your website overnight, or get 10,000+ page views?each month, or triple your opt-in list, or, or? you get the point. Blogging is THE answer.

Where to Start? Take 15-20 minutes and sit down with a blank sheet of paper. Write one or two words at the top which encompass the main, overall topic or theme for your business. For example, we can use ?Dog Care.? ?This will become the main theme for your blog. Beneath that heading, write as many sub-topics as you can think of such as: dog food brands, flea treatment, training tactics, dog toys, etc.

Keep going until you literally can?t think of anything else. If you can?t get to 50, type your top keyword phrase into Google and see what comes up to help thought-jog you. The reason behind this exercise is to have a reference list each time you sit down to write a blog post. No more writer?s block, and hopefully this will provide some motivation to keep blogging.

You don?t need to write posts nearly as long as this one. This one is long because I have a point to prove. :P Yours can be 400-500 words. Write a blog post?once a week ? minimum. When you?ve published the post, share it on your social networks and encourage people to read and share your blog post. Tell them WHY they should read your post ? give them a reason, give them the benefit.

At the end of the day, if you share good, valuable how-to or inspirational content,?your results will be incredible!

?But, I don?t wanna do blogging!?

Then find someone who will do it for you! It is THAT critical to your success.

We have a brilliant copywriter on our team who will write 4 blog posts a month for you, infused with keywords for optimal Search Engine Optimization, for just $297 a month.

A Secret Weapon That Could Blow the Roof Off Your Website

It?s obvious now that the more you blog, the faster you will see massive results. It?s a numbers game.

We?ve been running ?guest blogging? programs behind the curtain for some pretty big websites over the past couple of years.

We get started with a new client and structure a custom guest blogging program for their website. We work with the client to gather several writers who are committed to submitting at least one blog post per month. We then take all of the leg work off the client and completely manage their blog and the 10-15 authors we?have on board. This includes managing the editorial calendar, managing the authors, scheduling, search engine optimization, blog post prep work and more.

I tell you this because I have seen first hand how drastically guest blogging programs can increase traffic to a website.

Here?s a hit list of what you?ll need to do to run your own guest blogging program:

  • Generate a list of writing topics that the authors can use to gear their writing toward your theme.
  • Create a Guidelines document that the authors can use which explains your vision, how to upload their articles onto your website, what topcis they can write about, etc. (The one I custom-create for our guest blogging management programs is 16-pages and includes SEO training and a whole lot more!).
  • I suggest creating a Google Doc to keep track of the authors, their schedules and contact information.
  • Set up your blog to showcase the guest authors and really give them exposure (Examples: supermomceo.com and consciousdivas.com).
  • Create email templates for: inviting a writer to join your blog, an acceptance email, a getting started email, an email to let them know?the?date for which their blog post has been scheduled, an email letting the writer know that their post has been scheduled and asking them to share the post on their social media and a reminder email which goes out once a month reminding writers to upload their articles by the 1st of the month.
  • Generate WordPress user accounts for each guest author, and send them their login information with the Guidelines.

What?s in it for you?

  • You now have 10-15 people?writing good, valuable how-to or inspirational content each month.
  • These writers will be sharing their articles ALL OVER social media and in their newsletters.
  • Google is going to see that your website is supercharged and will start ranking your posts higher in search engines.
  • This will immediately boost your credibility

The traffic you get will be tremendous compared to what you?re getting now!

What?s it in for the guest writers?

  • They can see they are a guest writer on your site which adds social proof that they know what they?re talking about.
  • They will get exposure from your huge following.
  • They get to add their bio on your site, which adds a ?backlink? to their site and can increase their SEO.
  • They will be networking with other amazing individuals through your site, any many can become joint venture partners.

There are just so many benefits all around ? It?s a WIN WIN.

Easter egg hunt at Seattle zoo turns violent

(AP) ? One of usually peaceful springtime rituals of childhood ? the Easter egg hunt ? turned nasty at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle.

Blame the moms.

A statement on the Seattle Police Department blotter Monday says the "hard-boiled tale" began Sunday afternoon, "when one woman reportedly pushed a child aside as her own child was scrambling toward some brightly colored eggs."

Police say the two mothers began fighting and had to be separated three or four times. The fisticuffs left one woman with a bloody nose.

Only one mother was still there when officers arrived. She said she wasn't interested in pursuing charges against her attacker.

As the release puts it, that left officers without "any info that could crack the case."

Firefox 20 Launches With Per-Tab Private Browsing, New Download Manager And More WebRTC And HTML5 Features

firefox-logo-250Firefox 20 is now available for download. The emphasis of today’s release is on the new per-tab private browsing mode, which now allows Firefox desktop and Firefox for Android users to enable a single tab for private browsing instead of having to open a new window. Also new in this version is a new download manager for the desktop, the ability to customize the shortcuts on the home screen with your favorite sites and support for additional HTML5 and WebRTC features. The new version of Firefox for Android now also supports more devices that use less powerful ARMv6 processors, including the Samsung Galaxy Next, Dart, Pop and Q, as well as the HTC Aria and Legend. The new porn per-tab private browsing mode, Mozilla writes in today’s announcement, lets you “shop for a birthday gift in a private window with your existing browsing session uninterrupted. You can also use a private browsing window to check multiple email accounts simultaneously.” The feature that users will probably notice first, however, is the new download experience. Here is what it looks like: For developers, this new version introduces support for WebRTC’s getUserMedia call, which allows developers to access a users’ camera or microphone (with permission, of course). Firefox 20 also now supports blend modes for the and a number of <audio> and <video> improvements.
