BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Two Birmingham residents face charges of insurance fraud after police say they faked a fall at a local business, marking the first arrests made under a new state law.
Roderick Caffey, 55, and Rita Barnes, 50, were arrested and charged with insurance fraud, according to a news release from Birmingham Police Department spokesman Sgt. Johnny Williams Jr.
Caffey is accused of putting a liquid on the floor of the business, and Barnes then pretended to slip on it, police said. The pair then demanded money from the store's insurance company. Detectives used store surveillance video to identify the suspects.
Birmingham's major fraud unit is the first in the state to make an arrest under the insurance fraud law, which has been in effect since August 2012.
Both suspects were held on $20,000 bonds.
